05.13.2023 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team got back into the win column with a pair of victories over Radford on Saturday at Greenwood Field. First, Asheville and Radford finished up Friday's suspended game that finished with the Bulldogs coming out on top, 6-5. The Bulldogs followed that by scoring a season-high 22 runs in a 22-10 in the second game. With the two victories on Saturday, the Bulldogs improve to 23-24 overall and 9-14 in Big South play.
Game 1 Recap – In a game that began on Friday, the Bulldogs had to battle back from a 4-0 deficit. Prior to the game being suspended on Friday, Asheville pulled in front with a five-run fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead. The Bulldogs gained some more separation with a run in seventh to make it 6-4. Radford got a run back in the top of the ninth and got the tying run to third base. However, Spencer Hill came in and got a big out to pick up the save and clinch the 6-5 win for Asheville.
The Bulldogs had just six hits in the contest. Half of the six hits came off the bat of Tylan Reece. Reece finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Corbin Lanowitz drove in two runs with a double, while Michael Groves and Ty Kaufman also notched hits for the Bulldogs.
Asheville used four pitchers in the first game. Bryce Fisher entered the game in the first inning and pitched well, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits to go with four strikeouts. Fisher, who got credit for the win, was followed by Cole Schiff (2.1 innings pitched, one run allowed, three strikeouts) and Hill. Both of those relievers pitched well and closed out the comeback win for Asheville.
Game 2 Recap – There was no shortage of offense on either side in the day's second game. Asheville scored a season-high 22 runs on 20 hits on its way to a 22-10 win. All nine members of Asheville's starting lineup reached base once and eight of the players scored two runs or more.
Drew Bristow launched a pair of three-run home runs to finish with six RBI. He is the first Bulldog to finish with six RBI in a game since 2019 when Brandon Lankford also slugged two three-run home runs against Georgia Southern. Dylan Bacot was not far behind Bristow driving in five runs and hitting a three-run home run himself. Bacot's RBI total to 56 on the season, which is three shy of tying the program's single season RBI record.
Tony Castonguay totaled a career-high four hits, while Cameron Johnson added three hits and two runs scored as well. Kaufman reached base five times with three hits, two walks, and he scored four of Asheville's 22 runs.
The Bulldogs used just three pitchers in the contest. Ryan Douglas worked the first four innings before Justin Honeycutt threw three innings out of the Bulldog bullpen. The win was credited to Cole Bates as he threw a pair of shutout innings to finish off the victory.
Next Up – Asheville and Radford will finish up this weekend's Big South series on Sunday. Sunday's game will be played at the Big League Camp facility in Marion, N.C. and the first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
