Baseball Splits Saturday with Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball split its Saturday (May 10) affair with Charleston Southern in Big South Conference action, completing yesterday's suspended game which resulted in a 21-5 run rule victory for Charleston southern before winning the final game of the series 6-4.
Game One
Charleston Southern built a 3-0 lead through two innings, before Asheville responded with one run in the top of the third when Stockton singled home Pereira. Charleston Southern would plate 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth, before each team would score two in the fifth. Lanowitz led off the inning being hit by a pitch, before Lowe pushed him to second with a single through the left side. Later in the inning, Johnson would rip a two-out double down the right field line to plate two runs. Asheville would add one run in the sixth inning before the game was suspended, with Brock Mercado scoring on a single to second base by Michelson after leading off the inning with a double. Charleston Southern would add five runs in the home half of the sixth, before Asheville would score one in the seventh to bring the game to its final score.
Blaize Johnson paced the offense with three hits and three RBI in the game, while Lowe and Michelson each had two hits and Stockton, Kolby Watson and Mercado each had one hit. Stockton and Michelson also drove in runs for Asheville, while Lanowitz, Lowe, Johnson, Mercado and Pereira each scored. Shea Walker (0-5) took the loss for the Bulldogs on the mound, allowing six runs on six hits in three innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Nic Melton, Chase Buscher and Sam Thompson combined to finish the game on the mound for Asheville.
Game Two
Asheville would open the scoring in the first when Rylen Stockton doubled home Logan Lowe, before Charleston Southern tied the game in the fourth. Asheville would respond with two runs in the fifth, with the inning starting with a double down the left field line by Pereira. Pereira would move to third on an infield error off the bat of Lanowitz, before scoring on a squeeze bunt by Lowe. Lanowitz advanced to second on the play, before advancing to third on a ground ball and scoring on a RBI single by Patrick Gillen. Asheville would add two runs in the eighth to stretch the lead to 5-1, which saw Gillen start the offense in the frame with a one-out single. Jake Minarik would draw a two-out walk to keep the inning alive, before Mercado ripped a first-pitch single to right center to score Gillen. Owen Michelson would lace a single to left to score Minarik for Asheville's second run of the inning. Ashevile's insurance would come in the form of a wild pitch in the ninth that allowed Lanowitz to come home. Charleston Southern would plate three runs in the ninth but Asheville would hang on for the win.
Gillen paced the offense going 3-5 in the game, while Stockton also had two hits and Lanowitz, Johnson, Mercado. Michelson and Pereira each had one hit in the game. Lowe, Stockton, Gillen, Mercado and Michelson each drove in a run in the game, while Lanowitz scored twice and Lowe, Gillen, Minarik and Pereira each scored once. Asheville pitching kept Charleston Southern out of the hit column for the fist six-plus innings, with Daylinh Nguyen-Brown getting the start allowing one run in four innings on no hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Ryland Howell (2-1) picked up the win in relief, scattering one hit over three innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Garrett Crum relieved Howell with 1.1 innings allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts, before giving way to Matthew Hall. Hall would pick up his first save as a Bulldog surrendering just one hit in 0.2 innings of work.
