Karl Straus Track Memberships/Reservations

The newly renovated Karl Straus Track & Field (the “Track”) is now a premier Olympic-level track facility in western North Carolina. The track is open to all students, faculty and staff of UNC Asheville free of charge. Community members wishing to use the Track for fitness may apply for a membership as set forth in the 
Membership section. Camp and group reservations are also available pending date approval through Camp/Group Reservations.

Hours of Operation

When not being utilized for UNC Asheville (“University’) events, the Track will be open daily for use by members from 6AM to 10AM and 6PM to dusk. The field inside the Track may be used by reservation only.

Memberships
Track Memberships may be purchased online through the link below. 

UNC Asheville Student, Faculty, Staff and OLLI Member Memberships
  • Students currently enrolled in one or more classes at UNC Asheville,  University full-time and part-time faculty and staff and OLLI members have an automatic free membership to the Track. 
  • Students, Faculty, Staff and OLLI members must have a valid Rocky Card to gain access to the Track.
  • Students that graduate or take a semester off may purchase a paid Community Membership. 
Paid Community Membership - Annual, Family and Day Use Memberships
  • Individuals not affiliated with the University, UNC Asheville Alumni and students that are taking a semester off from study may purchase an annual track membership at the rate of $50.
  • Donors who have contributed $500 or more to the track renovation project will receive a 10-year complimentary membership.
  • Members must be at least 18 years of age and must complete an application for and purchase an Annual Membership or a Day Use pass
  • Membership will start on July 1 and end on June 30 of the following year. 
  • Members can sponsor up to two household members by purchasing an annual Family Membership at the rate of $125 (total of 3 memberships).  Children under the age of 16 may participate in the family membership free of charge.  All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult member.
  • Members and sponsored members must wear a valid Membership Wristband while walking or jogging on the Track.
  • Day passes may be purchased at the rate of $5 per day.
Camp/Group Reservations
Camp and group inquiries can be made online through the link below. Reservations are pending date availability, group size, and pricing will be determined on a case-by-case basis after the inquiry has been made.

Guidelines for Use
  • Members must comply with instructions on all posted signs or with verbal instructions given by the staff.
  • Walkers and joggers must use the outside lanes (5-8).
  • No food or drink is permitted on the Track or Field.  Water in a squeeze bottle with a lid or controlled spout is the only exception.
  • No cleats are allowed on the track surface.  Only clean and proper athletic shoes should be worn while using the Track.  
  • No jumping on mats.
  • No bicycle riding, motorized vehicles, roller blading, roller skating, or skateboarding.
  • Please wear proper exercise attire while running or jogging on the Track.
  • All personal devices, including cell phones and devices that play music, must be used with headphones. 
  • Please refrain from using a personal device camera or any other camera while using the facility unless you are photographing an approved event or competition.  Anyone taking pictures/videos for monetary gain must request approval from UNC Asheville’s Department of Communication and Marketing at least 7 days in advance. Use of personal devices with cameras of any kind in locker rooms, restrooms, changing areas or shower areas is strictly prohibited.

Notice Regarding Unattended Children
  • UNC Asheville welcomes children of students, faculty, staff, and Members as long as they are accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver and under appropriate supervision.  
  • The safety and security of children are the responsibility of the parent or adult caregiver.  UNC Asheville cannot assume responsibility for the safety of children left unattended.
  • Parents or adult caregivers must monitor all activities and behavior of their children while they are on Campus.
  • Parents or adult caregivers are responsible for any act of vandalism (cutting, tearing, defacing, or destroying equipment, furniture, or facility).
  • If a child is left on the Track and Field at closing time or in the event of an emergency, staff will immediately notify UNC Asheville's Campus Police
  • If a child is in imminent danger, call Campus Police at 828-232-5000 
Parking
  • Parking Permits and parking lot restrictions are applied and enforced 24/7/365 in all UNC Asheville lots.  Please visit parking.unca.edu to purchase a permit to park on campus.  
Membership Revocation
  • UNC Asheville reserves the right to terminate a membership at any time.  If UNC Asheville determines that the continued participation of any member would pose a danger to the life, health or the general well-being of any other member of the community, that member may be required to leave immediately.  
  • Facility supervisors, Campus Police and their representatives have the authority to require unruly members to leave the Track immediately.  Conduct infractions include, but are not limited to:
    • Profanity or any words that tend or intend to detract, disparage, or belittle individuals. This includes stereotypes and negative uses of ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, gender, class, religion, or disability.
    • Smoking, vaping or use of any type of tobacco
    • Alcohol
    • Physical or verbal altercations
    • Property damage
Pets
  • ONLY service animals are allowed on the track at any point. NO pets other than service animals are permitted. 
Lost and Found
  • UNC Asheville will not be responsible for articles lost, stolen or damaged in, on or about the Track and Field.  You are advised to leave all valuables at home or locked in your car before entering the Track. 
  • Lost and found items will be kept and stored with Campus Recreation for a period of two weeks.  Thereafter, lost and found items will be taken to Campus Police for proper disposal.
