Baseball Readies for a Home Series vs. Radford
05.11.2023 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will be back in action this weekend when it hosts Big South rival Radford in a three-game series. The first two games on Friday (5 p.m.) and Saturday (3 p.m.) will be played at Greenwood Field, while Sunday's series finale (1 p.m.) will be played at the Big League Camp facility in Marion, N.C.
Promotions – Thanks to the partnership with Ingles, admission to all three games this weekend will be free. Furthermore, alcohol will be available for purchase on Friday and Saturday.
Last Time Out – Asheville fell to East Tennessee State in non-conference action on Tuesday by a score of 12-6. With Tuesday's loss, the Bulldogs are now 21-24 on the 2023 season.
50 RBI and Counting – With two RBI Tuesday at ETSU, Dylan Bacot has now driven in 50 runs this season. He is just the ninth Bulldog to ever reach this milestone and the first since 2016. With seven games to go in the regular season, Bacot is within striking distance of the program's single-season RBI record of 59 set by Brian Shehan in 1989.
Upgrade in the Running Game – A definite improvement for Asheville this spring has been in its running game. The Bulldogs have stolen 52 bases this season, which is more than the team stole the past three seasons combined (48). It has also been a collective effort as nine different Bulldogs have stolen a base in 2023.
Winning at Home – The Bulldogs have four home games remaining on their 2023 schedule (three vs. Radford, one vs. Queens on Tuesday). If Asheville can pick up victories in two of those four games, it'll mark the most home wins in a single season in program history. The current record is 17 wins set by the 2004 team.
About Radford – Radford is currently 9-40 overall and 1-20 in Big South play. A player to watch for the Highlanders this weekend is Zack Whitacre. Whitacre is hitting .283 with five home runs and 25 RBI to go with a team-high 11 stolen bases this season.
Series Rewind vs. Radford – Historically, the Bulldogs hold the edge against the Highlanders. Boosted by a five-game winning streak against Radford entering this series, Asheville is 56-53 all-time against the Highlanders.
