MARION, N.C. – Fueled by a pair of stellar pitching performances, the UNC Asheville baseball team swept Niagara in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Big League Camp facility in Marion, N.C., by scores of 6-0 and 2-1. With the pair of wins, the Bulldogs improve to 2-5 on the season.
Game One Recap
In the first game of the day, the Purple Eagles and Bulldogs spent the first few innings feeling each other out. Dylan Bacot put Asheville in front with a double in the third inning that plated Ty Kaufman. A couple of innings later, Kaufman delivered arguably the biggest hit of the game with a three-run double to grow the Bulldog advantage to 4-0. Dominic Freeberger drove in Kaufman again in the seventh, and Grayson Preslar tacked on another RBI single to score Robbie Burnett to add another insurance run for Asheville.
Those runs proved to be more than enough for senior lefthander Jacob Edwards. Edwards was dominant, tossing eight shutout innings allowing five hits and one walk to go along with eight strikeouts. Through 13 innings so far this season, Edwards has yet to allow an earned run. Cole Bates then closed things out for the Bulldogs with a spotless ninth inning.
Kaufman led the way going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Freeberger also reached base four times thanks to a pair of hits and two walks. Cam Johnson also had a two-hit game with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a run scored.
Game Two Recap
Just like in the first game of the day, the Bulldogs got a stellar outing from their starter on the mound, Justin Honeycutt. Honeycutt worked the first six innings for Asheville, allowing one run (not earned) on five hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts.
After Freeberger got Asheville on the board first with a sacrifice fly to score MJ Lucas in the third inning, Niagara starter Marcus Cashman settled down after that and worked into the ninth inning. Freeberger lined a double off Cashman to force the Purple Eagles to turn it over to their bullpen. The next Asheville hitter struck out before Burnett came up with a clutch single to score Freeberger to give the Bulldogs their second straight victory, 2-1.
Following Honeycutt's departure after six innings, the Bulldogs got some stellar relief work. Blake Little logged a scoreless seventh, and Bates struck out the side for his second scoreless inning of the day. Freeberger pitched the ninth inning was credited with the win after striking out two in his second appearance on the mound this season.
Asheville and Niagara will return to the Big League Camp facility in Marion on Sunday to conclude the four-game series. The first pitch is set for noon.
