MARION, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team clinched its first series victory of the season on Sunday when it defeated Niagara by a score of 8-6 at the Big League Camp facility in Marion. With the win, the Bulldogs clinch their third straight win and improve to 3-5 on the season.
The trio of Dominic Freeberger (3-for-4, three runs scored), Dylan Bacot (2-for-4, home run, four RBI), and Robbie Burnett (2-for-4, RBI) led the way for Asheville on Sunday. Wade Chandler scored three runs, and Kaden Smith drew a pair of walks to help the cause.
Sunday's contest was a back-and-forth one as the lead changed hands five times. After Asheville opened the scoring in the first with a run on a wild pitch, the Purple Eagles answered back with a three-run second inning. However, Bacot connected on his first home run in a Bulldog uniform to tie the score again at 3-3.
Asheville and Niagara continued to trade leads through the middle innings, with Bacot and Burnett picking up RBIs. The score was knotted up at 6-6, heading to the final third of the game. In the eighth, Bacot put Asheville in front with an RBI single, and a passed ball gave Asheville an insurance run to help it hold an 8-6 going to the ninth.
Senior JP Perez, who entered the game in the seventh inning, gave the Bulldogs a stellar relief appearance. Perez pitched three scoreless innings, allowed one hit, and struck out three to close out Asheville's 8-6 win.
Sophomore Bryce Fisher made his second start of the season on Sunday. The lefthander worked the first five innings, where he allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits with one walk and struck out two Niagara players. Spencer Hill also made an appearance on Sunday where he allowed one run (not earned) and one hit in his lone inning of work. Perez, meanwhile, was credited as the winning pitcher after his three scoreless innings. It was the second win of Perez's career.
Riding a three-game winning streak, the Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Wofford for a non-conference contest. The first pitch between Asheville and Wofford is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
