Bulldogs rally from an early deficit but fall at Wofford, 9-8
03.02.2022 | Baseball
Asheville was led on Wednesday by the top two hitters in its order in Ty Kaufman and Dominic Freeberger. Freeberger went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Kaufman, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Robbie Burnett, Michael Groves, and Grayson Preslar also picked up hits for the Bulldogs in the contest.
On the pitching side, the Bulldogs used six pitchers on Wednesday. Cole Schiff made his first collegiate start and logged two scoreless innings. Brett Johnson (1.2 innings) and Chris Sabo (1 inning) also held the Terriers off the scoreboard in their outings.
Both teams threatened to score in the early innings, but neither squad seemed to find that critical hit to break things open. Asheville used a pair of double plays in the first three innings to end scoring threats by Wofford to help keep the game scoreless heading to the fourth inning.
The fourth inning was where the action really picked up. Wofford sent 10 hitters to the plate in the frame that led to six runs on four hits. Contributing to the six runs were four stolen bases, two walks, and a balk.
After a scoreless fifth, the Bulldogs answered back significantly in the sixth. Kaufman and Freeberger got Asheville on the scoreboard with a single and double to begin the stanza. A hit by pitch, a pair of walks, and a Terrier error led to a few more runs for Asheville to put a sizable dent in the deficit. Kaufman and Freeberger completed the comeback as both players had two-run singles to give Asheville its first lead of the night, 8-6.
Wofford would pull back in front in the eighth. The frame began with a walk and a single, and then a two-run double gave the lead back to the Terriers heading to the ninth inning.
With three outs to play with, the Bulldogs did get a pair of runners on base in the ninth. Dylan Bacot reached after a pitch hit him, and Groves worked out a walk. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs did not find a run-producing hit to knock either runner in, and Wofford held on for the 9-8 win.
Now 3-6 on the season, Asheville will be back in action with a three-game weekend series beginning Friday at Mercer. Friday's game is set for 6 p.m. first pitch, while Saturday's and Sunday's contests are scheduled to get underway at 2 and 1 p.m., respectively.
