ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Coming off its first series win of the season, the UNC Asheville baseball team will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Wofford for a non-conference matchup. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Terriers is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville edged out Niagara by a score of 8-6 last Sunday in a contest played at the Big League Camp facility in Marion, N.C. The victory boosted Asheville's record to 3-5 on the young 2022 season.
Freeberger is finding it – Dominic Freeberger had an impressive week in five games against nationally-ranked Tennessee and Niagara. The Baltimore, Md. native hit .467 in 15 at-bats with three doubles, five runs scored, three doubles, and three RBI. Freeberger also showed stellar patience at the plate as he drew six walks and finished the week with a .609 on-base percentage. In addition to his work with the bat, Freeberger was also the winning pitcher in Asheville's 2-1 win over Niagara on Saturday after tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
Senior starter shines again – Jacob Edwards logged his second straight impressive start to begin the 2022 campaign Saturday vs. Niagara. The senior lefthander tossed eight shutout innings while allowing five hits, one walk, and striking out eight. Edwards, who held Niagara hitters to a .185 batting average, has now pitched 13 innings so far in 2022 and has not allowed an earned run.
Bolstered by the bullpen – A primary key in Asheville's series win over the weekend was the production it got from its bullpen. In the three victories, the combination of Freeberger, JP Perez, Cole Bates, Spencer Hill, and Blake Little combined to allow one run (not earned) on two hits in eight innings of work and held opposing hitters to a .080 batting average to go with 10 strikeouts.
About Wofford – Wofford holds a record of 2-4 so far this season, with both victories coming against George Mason. A strength for the Terriers has been their ability on the base paths. Coming into Wednesday's game, Wofford ranks 34th nationally with 14 stolen bases in six games played.
Series Rewind vs. Terriers – Despite not being in the same conference, the Bulldogs and Terriers have faced off several times over the years. Asheville holds the slight edge in the all-time series, 25-24. However, Wofford has won the last four games between the two programs, including a 10-9 win in 11 innings last March in Greenwood Field. The latest victory for Asheville against Wofford was on April 18, 2018, by a score of 5-3.
