Bulldogs Take Down Eagles in Game Three to Complete the Sweep

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – UNC Asheville baseball capped off an impressive weekend as they defeated Coppin State, 9-2, Sunday afternoon to complete the three-game sweep.
It was the first sweep of the 2020 season for the Bulldogs. UNC Asheville completed the feat once last season as they swept Longwood in a three-game series, March 29-31.
Ryan Douglas picked up the win for the Bulldogs as the freshman right-hander struck out a career high seven batters through 6.1 innings. Douglas allowed only two runs on five hits.
Tyler Serricchio had a three-hit game for the Bulldogs as the senior also scored two runs and had one RBI. MJ Lucas went 2-4 with two doubles. The freshman catcher also had two RBIs and scored a run.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead as UNC Asheville put three runs on the board in the bottom of the second. The rally began as Easton Jones reached on an error and then Chris Troost walked to put runners on first and second. Serricchio singled to left-center to load the bases for Kole Harris.
Harris drew a bases loaded walk to bring in the first run of the game and Drew Bristow hit a sacrifice fly to bring in run number two. The third run scored as Lucas hit a rocket to second base that was misplayed allowing Serricchio to score from second.
The Bulldogs added on two more in the bottom of the fifth as Serricchio once again got the Bulldogs going with a single up the middle. After a steal of second by Serricchio, Bristow walked to put runners on first and second. Lucas hit his first double of the game as the left-handed swinging catcher doubled to the left-centerfield gap that brought in both baserunners to score.
Coppin State scored their first two runs of the game in the top of the sixth as their lead-off hitter, Justin Oakley, walked with one out. Marco Castillo then hit a no-doubt homerun that sailed over the leftfield wall to push two runs across the plate for the Eagles.
The Eagles threatened again in the seventh as Coppin State put runners on first and second with one out. Ethan Tressler entered the game in relief of Douglas and after loading the bases got two huge outs to preserve the Bulldogs' five run lead. Tressler froze Cole Gerula at the plate as he sent the slugger down on strikes. Tressler then got the Eagles lead-off man to pop out to the second baseman Troost to strand the bases loaded.
UNC Asheville added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh as they increased their lead to seven runs. Lucas led off the inning with his second double of the game. Greg Gasparro hit his third homerun of the year and second in as many days as he sent a ball over the right-centerfield fence to score two.
Sebastian Dunn followed the Gasparro homerun with a double down the rightfield line. Dunn scored a few batters later as Troost brought him home with a single to right. Jones, who reached on a walk, scored UNC Asheville's fourth run of the inning as Serricchio brought him home with his third hit of the game as the right-handed hitting senior singled to right.
Coppin State couldn't do anything against the Bulldog pitching staff as Gino Marra entered to pitch the eighth and ninth innings. The freshman left-hander sent down six of seven batters, allowing a single in the eighth, to secure the 9-2 victory for the Bulldogs.
UNC Asheville will be on the field again, Wednesday, March 11, as the Bulldogs take on Georgia State at 4 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
