ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team got back into the win column on Tuesday as it knocked off High Point by a score of 5-2 at Greenwood Field. The victory improved Asheville's record to 4-9 on the season and marked the Bulldogs' first win over the Panthers since 2017.
Asheville had plenty of players step and have good days to fuel Tuesday's win. Dominic Freeberger led the way finishing a home run shy of the cycle on a 3-for-4 day at the plate. If his work the bat wasn't enough, Freeberger also came in to pitch in the ninth inning and picked up the save.
Michael Groves drove in a pair of runs in a 1-for-3 day at the plate, while Dylan Bacot reached base twice and scored two of Asheville's five runs. Ty Kaufman, Corbin Lanowitz, and Grayson Preslar also notched hits in the win.
In addition to the work offensively, the Bulldogs pitchers had one of their better games on the young 2022 season. Collectively, the five Bulldog pitchers that threw Tuesday held High Point to seven hits and two runs and struck out five.
High Point would be the team that would crack the scoreboard first on Tuesday after two shutout innings as a single from Javon Fields scored Brady Pearre to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Other than the RBI single from Fields, starter Cole Schiff did well pitching the first three innings, where he allowed one run on three hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts.
Blake Little, who ended up being the winning pitcher for Asheville, tossed back-to-back scoreless frames in the middle of the game to allow the Bulldogs to mount a comeback. Lanowitz lined a single to right field to plate Freeberger to tie the game at 1-1. A batter later, Groves laid a perfect bunt down to score Bacot to give Asheville its first lead of the afternoon, 2-1. In the fifth, Asheville had a pair of clutch 2-out hits from Kaufman (single) and Freeberger (triple) to add to its lead, 3-1.
Groves and Preslar would come back in the sixth and drive in runs to widen Asheville's lead to four runs heading into the seventh. High Point did manage to get a run off of Justin Honeycutt in the seventh, but the tandem of Jacob Edwards and Freeberger held the Panthers off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth to finish off the win.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a trip to Johnson City on Saturday. Asheville will play Rider at noon before taking on host East Tennessee State roughly 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
