A late home run lifts ETSU past the Bulldogs, 4-1

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – A three-run home run in the eighth inning from East Tennessee State's Ashton King was enough for ETSU to take the 4-1 victory over the UNC Asheville baseball team on Sunday afternoon.
In a well-pitched game throughout, the Bulldogs threatened to score the game's first runs in two of the first three innings. In the first, Dominic Freeberger and Robbie Burnett both walked, but ETSU starter Hunter Loyd was able to get out of that jam without allowing the go-ahead run to score.
The Bulldogs also had a pair of runners on base in the third frame. Freeberger notched what turned out to be Asheville's lone hit of the game with a triple into the right-centerfield gap. Burnett followed with another walk, but the stellar fielding play from ETSU's third baseman got the Bucs out of another jam and kept the game scoreless.
Asheville starter Jacob Edwards threw two perfect innings to begin Sunday's matchup. However, ETSU finally made some headway in the third. Three singles from ETSU chased in the game's first run, but a timely double play from the Bulldogs prevented the Bucs from posting a huge inning.
Asheville wasted little time in answering back. Corbin Lanowitz led the fourth inning off with a walk. Michael Groves then moved Lanowitz into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Cam Johnson then hit a bullet that the Buccaneers' shortstop misplayed to score Lanowitz from second and tie the score at 1-1.
Neither team did much offensively through the game's middle innings. In the eighth, the action picked back up when Freeberger and Burnett worked back-to-back two-out walks. However, that threat was ended when Freeberger was picked off of second base.
The deciding factor in Sunday's contest came in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, ETSU notched back-to-back singles for its first baserunners since the third inning. Edwards struck out ETSU's next hitter, but King's critical three-run blast came next to put his team back in front. With a three-run lead to protect in the ninth, ETSU's Nathaniel Tate retired the Bulldogs to finish the 4-1 victory.
Asheville, now 4-10 on the season, will be back in action on Tuesday when it welcomes Lafayette to Greenwood Field for a non-conference matchup. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Leopards is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
