ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Lafayette scored five runs in the 11th inning to upend the UNC Asheville baseball team by a score of 8-3 Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
Asheville was led on Tuesday by the trio of Dominic Freeberger, Corbin Lanowitz, and Tylan Reece. All three players posted two-hit games, and Michael Groves and Dylan Bacot also picked up hits in the contest for the Bulldogs.
Tuesday's game between the Bulldogs and Leopards was a low-scoring affair for most of the contest. Lafayette struck first with a pair of runs in the second, thanks to a trio of walks and a single to give it an early 2-0 lead.
Asheville would answer back with two runs of its own in the fourth. Bacot and Lanowitz got things started with a pair of walks to begin the inning. Cam Johnson executed a successful sacrifice bunt to move both Bulldogs into scoring position before Groves came through with a clutch two-run single to tie the score at 2-2.
The score would remain deadlocked at 2-2 until the eighth inning. Lafayette would break the tie with a sacrifice fly in the top half of the frame before the Bulldogs did the same in the bottom half to once again tie the score, this time at 3-3.
The deciding factor on Tuesday came in the 11th inning. Lafayette matched its hit total from the first 10 innings in the 11th. Those hits were coupled with a couple of walks, stolen bases, and an Asheville error to spark the five-run outburst. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs did not have an answer in the bottom half of the inning this time as the Leopards held on for the 8-3 win.
Freeberger, who began the 11th inning on the mound, ended up taking the loss for the Bulldogs, which evens his record at 1-1. Overall, the Bulldogs used 10 different pitchers on the day. Blake Little, Ryan Douglas, Bryce Fisher, Jay Allmer, Cole Bates, and Zeus Ponder all notched scoreless appearances against the Leopards.
The Bulldogs will return to action this weekend as they open their Big South schedule with a three-game series at Longwood. Game times are set for 6, 2, and 1 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, respectively. Furthermore, all three games are scheduled to be on ESPN+.
