ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will lift the lid on Big South play this weekend when it travels to take on Longwood in a three-game series beginning Friday. All three games between the Bulldogs and Lancers are scheduled to air on ESPN+.
Probable Pitching Matchups
Game 1 – LHP Bryce Fisher (AVL) vs. RHP Andrew Potojecki (LWU) – 6 p.m. (ESPN+) (Live Stats)
Game 2 – RHP Ryan Douglas (AVL) vs. LHP Kevin Warunek (LWU) – 2 p.m. (ESPN+) (Live Stats)
Game 3 – LHP Jacob Edwards (AVL) vs. RHP Dominick D'Ercole (LWU) – 1 p.m. (ESPN+) (Live Stats)
Last Time Out – Asheville fell in its last time out to Lafayette by a score of 8-3 in 11 innings last Tuesday at Greenwood Field. The loss moved the Bulldogs' record to 4-11 on the 2022 campaign.
Fine Streak for Freeberger – After leading Asheville in hits in 2021, Freeberger picked up where he left off in the early going of this season. In the last 10 games, Freeberger is hitting .500 with five doubles, two triples, and six RBI.
Edwards Climbing the Strikeout List – Senior Jacob Edwards, who is scheduled to get the ball for Sunday's series finale, has struck out 157 hitters during his tenure as a Bulldog. Edwards needs just 15 more strikeouts to move into 10th place on the program's all-time strikeout list.
Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week – In case you missed it, the Bulldogs landed their first conference weekly award winner earlier this week. Blake Little was named the Big South's Relief Pitcher of the Week after tossing two perfect innings and getting the win in Asheville's victory over High Point on March 8. Little joins Freeberger as the only two Bulldogs to earn Relief Pitcher of the Week honor from the conference.
Hoping for Big Things in Big South play – Asheville hopes to build upon one of its more successful conference seasons in 2021 into 2022. The 2021 Bulldogs won 14 games against conference foes, which is the most in program history. Furthermore, Asheville won a series last spring against Campbell, Radford, Presbyterian, Winthrop, Charleston Southern, and Longwood.
Scouting Longwood – The Lancers have been playing well recently as they bring a four-game winning streak into this weekend's series with the Bulldogs. Longwood has been dominant playing at home, winning seven of eight games played at its home park so far in 2022. The Lancers are a squad led by their offense as they have the Big South leaders in both home runs (Hunter Gilliam – 6) and stolen bases (Michael Dolberry and Michael Peterson – 9).
Series Rewind vs. Longwood – The Lancers hold the edge historically against the Bulldogs, winning 12 of the 21 all-time matchups. However, Asheville has won five of the last six games between the two programs, including taking two of three from the Lancers last spring at Greenwood Field.
