Edwards Throws a Gem as Bulldogs Win Thriller Over UAB

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – UNC Asheville baseball got into the win column Friday evening as they defeated UAB by a score of 7-3 on the road.
Sophomore pitcher Jacob Edwards made the best start of his young career in a Bulldog uniform as the left-hander threw a career-high eight innings. Edwards struck out 10 batters which is also a career-high for the sophomore. Edwards threw 91 pitches through his eight innings as he allowed only two runs on four hits and allowed only two free passes in the game.
Edwards started out strong as the sophomore allowed only one base runner through the first three innings of play. The left-hander allowed a two-out single in the first and did not allow another Blazer his until the bottom of the fifth.
After the Blazers got their second hit of the game to lead-off the fifth, Edwards struck out the next three batters to strand the runner. The Blazers opened the sixth inning with a walk and the runner advanced to third on a wild pitch and then a stolen base. The UAB offense was able to push across their first run of the game as the next batter grounded out allowing the runner to score from third.
Edwards allowed one base runner in the seventh inning but he was erased on a fielders' choice. The sophomore lefty picked up two strikeouts in the inning to send the Bulldogs to the eighth with the lead.
After getting only two hits through the first three innings of the game, the Bulldogs pushed across the first run of the game in the fourth inning. UNC Asheville had only one hit in the inning but they capitalized on the defenses' mistakes as the Bulldogs scored three runs on five Blazer errors in the inning. Greg Gasparro were credited with RBIs in the innings while Barbour, Easton Jones and PJ Heintz all crossed home plate in the inning.
Brandon Lankford walked to start out the top of the fifth and Jones doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third with no one out. Chris Troost moved the runners with a groundout as UNC Asheville went up 4-0 with Troost's RBI.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the sixth as UNC Asheville strung together four two-out hits. Four straight singles from Sebastian Dunn, Dominic Freeberger, Lankford and Jones pushed across two runs as Dunn and Freeberger both crossed the plate on RBIs from Lankford and Jones to give UNC Asheville the 6-0 lead.
After UAB scored one in the bottom of the sixth, UNC Asheville answered back with another run to keep the six run advantage going into the seventh inning stretch. Barbour hit a one out single and advanced to second on an MJ Lucas walk. Barbour scored run number seven for the Bulldogs as the Blazer defense committed another error.
UNC Asheville went three up and three down in the top of the eighth bringing the Blazers back to bat with the Bulldogs leading 7-1.
UAB was able to push across only their second run of the game as Edwards allowed the Blazers to get only their third hit of the game in the inning in the bottom of the eighth.
Edwards was relieved in the ninth by Hunter Hoopes. The Blazer offense made some noise in the bottom of the ninth as they scored one run and loaded the bases in the innings. JP Perez entered the game for the Bulldogs and got UNC Asheville out of the bases loaded jam with the 7-3 victory, picking up his first career save.
Gasparro, Freeberger, Jones and Barbour all had multi-hit games in the victory. UNC Asheville batters walked six times in the game while five Bulldogs were credited with an RBI in the victory.
The Bulldogs and the Blazers will play in game two of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. Senior Blake Brown is scheduled to get the ball for the Bulldogs as he'll face right-handed pitcher Tanner Rusk.
