BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Steve Burnich hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning but that was all the offense UNC Asheville would get as it fell to Birmingham-Southern 9-2 in Big South baseball action on Sunday.
BSC scored four runs in the first and two in the third to take an early 6-0 lead. Blake Burton and Brandon Hynick had RBI singles and Brint Hardy had an RBI on a sac-fly in the first. A run scored on a Woods' sac-fly and one more came home on an error in the third.
Asheville got on the board with a two runs in the sixth to cut the BSC lead to 6-2. Tony Campana singled and scored on a Steve Burnich's second home run of the season.
The Panthers, who claimed their ninth straight win, added two in the seventh and one in the eighth to wrap up the scoring on the day. A Froehlich RBI triple and a Woods' RBI single gave BSC an 8-2 advantage. Allen Aubin doubled and scored on a Burton single in the eighth.
Mark Doll (2-1) started and went a planned two innings to earn the win. Doll had one strikeout and allowed one hit in two scoreless innings. Bailey Pratt struck out three in five innings and allowed two runs on five hits. John Baird worked the final two innings with four strikeouts and gave up two hits.
Tim Johnson (1-4) was the losing pitcher for the Bulldogs, allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Campana's sixth inning single gave him a hit in all three games of the series and extended his hitting streak in Big South Conference games to 27-straight games.
The Bulldogs return to action next Friday as they travel to Radford for a 3 p.m. game.
