RADFORD, Va. – The UNC Asheville baseball team finished off an impressive three-game sweep of Radford on Sunday afternoon as it cruised past the Highlanders by a score of 12-2. Asheville is now 16-20 overall and 10-5 in Big South play with the victory. Furthermore, it marks the first time Asheville has swept Radford in a series since 2007.
Much like the first two games of the weekend, the Bulldogs had contributions offensively throughout their lineup on Sunday. The trio of Dylan Bacot, Michael Groves, and PJ Heintz all had three hits in the win. Bacot reached base on all four of his plate appearances on his way to a 3-for-3 day with three runs scored and one more driven in. Meanwhile, Groves and Heintz launched solo home runs and drove in three runs a piece. Sophomores Cameron Johnson (2-for-4, three-run home run, four RBI) and Ty Kaufman (2-for-5 with a walk) also had multi-hit days for the Bulldogs.
On the mound, senior Jacob Edwards turned in yet another stellar performance on his way to his sixth win of the season. Edwards pitched seven innings, allowed one run on four hits, and struck out five against Radford. It marks the fifth time this season that Edwards has held an opposing lineup to one run or less in a start. Chris Sabo and Spencer Hill came in to relieve Edwards and did not allow an earned run in the final two innings.
Following a perfect first inning, Radford starter Zach Davidson ran into trouble in the second. Back-to-back doubles from Bacot and Johnson put Asheville in front 1-0 before Groves, Tylan Reece, and Heintz followed with singles to quickly grow the lead to 3-0.
Asheville came back in the third and kept the pressure on the Highlanders. Walks drawn by Robbie Burnett and Bacot were followed by a three-run home run by Johnson to double Asheville's advantage to 6-0. Groves then tripled, and Heintz knocked him in to make it 7-0 Bulldogs.
A single run in the sixth and then a pair of solo home runs in the ninth from Groves and Heintz rounded out the scoring for Asheville. On the weekend, the Bulldogs scored 46 runs (15.3 per game) in the three-game sweep of Radford.
With Sunday's win, the Bulldogs currently sit alone in third place in the Big South standings with a 10-5 record. This weekend's sweep marks Asheville's first road sweep of a Big South foe since 2012, when it won all three games at High Point on May 4-6. Along with a three-game sweep of Charleston Southern last month, the Bulldogs have now swept two conference series for the first time since 2012, when they achieved the feat against VMI and High Point.
Asheville will aim to keep this momentum rolling on Tuesday when it travels to take on Charlotte in a non-conference contest. The first pitch between the 49ers and Bulldogs is scheduled for 6 p.m.
