04.26.2022 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte hit a pair of home runs to power past the UNC Asheville baseball team Tuesday evening in non-conference action by a score of 5-0.
Asheville totaled four hits offensively on Tuesday. Dominic Freeberger reached a total of three times via a single, walk, and an error. Brock Mercado reached twice thanks to a single and a walk. Rounding out the hits for the Bulldogs were doubles from Robbie Burnett and Tylan Reece.
On the mound, the Bulldogs used eight pitchers on Tuesday. Starter Cole Schiff along with Zeus Ponder, Chris Sabo, Dawson Salter, Spencer Hill, and Blake Little all logged scoreless appearances for Asheville. The Bulldogs also turned their 43rd double play of the season as they continue to rank near the top in the country in double plays turned.
Following a scoreless first inning, the 49ers got the scoring started in the second. Back-to-back one-out hits from Charlotte were followed by a three-run home run from Huck Wathan to give his squad the early 3-0 lead.
Charlotte would add to its lead in the fifth. A one-out walk was followed by a two-run home run by David McCabe to extend the 49ers' lead to 5-0.
Asheville had chances to crack the scoreboard with runners on in multiple innings vs. 49er starter Matt Brooks. However, Brooks was outstanding, allowing just four hits, and two walks to go with 10 strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched. The Bulldogs eventually chased Brooks from the game in the top of the eighth. A single from Freeberger and a double from Burnett gave Asheville runners on second and third with one out. However, Charlotte reliever Colby Bruce came in and struck out the next two batters to keep the score 5-0 49ers. Spencer Giesting then came on in the ninth inning to strike out the side to finish the win for Charlotte.
Asheville, now 16-21 on the season, will return to action next Wednesday when it welcomes in Wofford for a non-conference tilt at Greenwood Field. The first pitch for that matchup is set for 5 p.m.
