Wofford uses two big innings to rally past Asheville on Wednesday
05.04.2022 | Baseball
Asheville tallied six hits on Wednesday, with four of those going for extra bases. Robbie Burnett had a two-run triple, while PJ Heintz (RBI double) and Ty Kaufman (RBI single) had run-producing hits. Cameron Johnson went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, and the duo of Michael Groves and Dominic Freeberger each picked up hits and scored a run a piece.
The Bulldog pitching staff had eight players take the mound in the contest. Blake Little pitched a pair of shutout innings with a strikeout and a walk. Chris Banks and Freeberger also posted scoreless outings out of the Bulldog bullpen.
Wofford wasted little time scoring the game's first runs. Three hits in the first inning, including a two-run home run, led to three Terrier runs to put Asheville into an early 3-0 hole. A sacrifice fly in the second extended Wofford's lead to 4-0.
Asheville cut Wofford's lead in half in the second. Dylan Bacot got things started when he was hit by a pitch, and Johnson followed with a double to give the Bulldogs runners at second and third with one out. Back-to-back wild pitches plated both Bacot and Johnson to get Asheville back within two runs, 4-2.
Following scoreless frames put up by Little and JP Perez, Asheville took the lead with a five-run fourth inning. The five-run outburst was fueled by five hits and a hit by pitch. Johnson got on base via a hit by pitch. Groves moved Johnson up to third base with a double before Tylan Reece drove the latter in with a sacrifice fly. Heintz, Kaufman, and Burnett all followed with the run-producing hits mentioned earlier to put Asheville on top, 7-4.
Wofford answered Asheville's outburst with back-to-back big innings to pull in front for good. The Terriers scored seven times in both the fifth and sixth innings to finish off the 18-7 win in seven innings.
Asheville will return to action this weekend when it welcomes in rival Gardner-Webb for a three-game Big South series. Currently, the series is scheduled to get underway on Friday at 5 p.m. from Greenwood Field.
