Gardner-Webb picks up a pair of victories over Asheville on Saturday
05.07.2022 | Baseball
Game One Recap – The first game wrapped up Saturday began Friday evening. Asheville and Gardner-Webb got the first two outs of the game in the books before a one hour, six-minute rain delay halted play.
After returning from the rain delay, Gardner-Webb was able to finish off a first inning where it scored three runs on two hits and one Asheville error. GWU added two runs in the third and four more in the fifth to extend its advantage to 9-2.
Asheville, meanwhile, was able to score single runs in second, fourth, and seventh before taking a big chunk out of the Gardner-Webb lead with a five-run eighth inning to make the score 10-8.
The second stoppage was due to the lights at Greenwood Field going out Friday evening, which forced the two teams to pick the game up on Saturday. Before the lights went out, the Runnin' Bulldogs loaded the bases and had nobody out. When play resumed on Saturday, GWU pushed two more runs across to finish off the 12-8 win.
The Bulldogs finished off the series opener with 12 hits. Ty Kaufman, Dominic Freeberger, Robbie Burnett, and Corbin Lanowitz all had two hits in the contest. Lanowitz scored three of Asheville's eight runs and the duo of Burnett and Cameron Johnson each drove in a pair of runs.
Zeus Ponder started Friday's game for Asheville on the mound and set new career-highs in innings pitched (four) and strikeouts (five). JP Perez (2.1 innings) and Jacob Williams (1.1 innings) each logged outings where they did not allow an earned run.
Game Two Recap – The originally scheduled game for Saturday followed and began much more as a pitchers' duel than the series opener. Starting pitchers Tyler Switalski for Gardner-Webb and Ryan Douglas for Asheville matched each other through the game's early going.
The Bulldogs would strike first in the third inning. With two outs, Tylan Reece singled and then Ty Kaufman followed with a double to give Asheville its first true scoring threat of the game. A Gardner-Webb wild pitch and throwing error chased in both Reece and Kaufman to give Douglas and the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage.
Gardner-Webb answered back with a run of its own in fourth without the benefit of a hit before Asheville got that run back thanks to an RBI single by PJ Heintz to make the score 3-1.
Neither team got much going offensively until the eighth inning. Gardner-Webb scored six runs on six hits to go with two Bulldog errors to vault ahead of the Bulldogs as it turned out for good as it won 7-3. Reece posted the lone two-hit game for Asheville in the matchup, while Kaufman, Freeberger, Heintz, and Dylan Bacot had hits as well.
Douglas pitched one of his best games of the season as he allowed just one run on one hit in five innings to go with three strikeouts.
Next Up – Asheville, now 16-24 overall and 10-7 in Big South play, and Gardner-Webb will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch for the series finale is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
