Bulldogs end the weekend with a 7-1 win over Gardner-Webb

05.08.2022 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Behind strong pitching and timely hitting, the UNC Asheville baseball team got back into the win column Sunday afternoon as it downed Gardner-Webb by a score of 7-1 at Greenwood Field. The win, which snaps a four-game skid for Asheville, improves the Bulldogs' record to 17-24 overall and 11-7 in Big South action.

Starter Jacob Edwards continued his stellar senior campaign on Sunday. The High Point, N.C. native, picked up his seventh win of the season after tossing eight innings, allowing one run on two hits to go with eight strikeouts. Fellow senior Dominic Freeberger came in and threw a scoreless ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts to finish off the win. Edwards' seven wins in 2022 are tied for the fourth-most by a Bulldog pitcher in a single season in program history, and the most by an Asheville hurler since Alan DeRatt picked up eight wins in 2008.

Offensively, the Bulldogs finished Sunday with 11 hits marking the 12th time this season that the team has totaled 10 or more hits in a game. Robbie Burnett led the charge going 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three RBI. It marks the first multi-home run game by a Bulldog this season and the first since May 5, 2021, when Brandon Lankford launched a pair over the fence at Presbyterian.

PJ Heintz went 2-for-4 as he extended his hitting streak to five games, while the trio of Ty Kaufman (RBI triple), Cameron Johnson (RBI single), and Wade Chandler (RBI single) all had run-producing hits on the day as well.

Sunday's game started well for Asheville as Burnett gave Edwards and the Bulldogs a quick 1-0 lead thanks to a solo home run in the bottom of the first. Burnett left the yard again in the third with Freeberger on first base to make the score 3-0 Bulldogs. Johnson would add his RBI single later that inning to make the score 4-0 Asheville.

Asheville added more insurance in the fourth when Kaufman chased home Tylan Reece with a triple to right field before a sacrifice fly from Freeberger extended the Bulldog lead to six.

Gardner-Webb cracked the scoreboard in the sixth on an RBI groundout, but Asheville promptly got that run back in the seventh with Chandler's RBI single.

The tandem of Edwards and Freeberger on the mound was outstanding for Asheville on Sunday. The duo limited Gardner-Webb to just seven baserunners for the game and two hits after the Runnin' Bulldogs scored 19 runs and totaled 20 hits in the first two games of the series.

Asheville will be back in action on Tuesday when it visits East Tennessee State for a non-conference matchup. Tuesday's game, which will be the final non-Big South game for the Bulldogs this season, is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
