Late Offense lifts ETSU past Asheville, 7-4
05.10.2022 | Baseball
All nine Bulldog position players that started Tuesday night's game reached base at least once. Robbie Burnett (2-for-5, double), Cameron Johnson (2-for-4, double, run scored) and Tylan Reece (2-for-3, two-run home run) all posted two-hit nights for Asheville. Dylan Bacot, Michael Groves, and Corbin Lanowitz all drove in runs as well.
Seven different Bulldogs saw time on the mound Tuesday. Starter Cole Schiff logged arguably his best outing of the season tossing three scoreless innings allowing two hits to go with a strikeout. Dawson Salter, Brett Johnson, and JP Perez all notched scoreless appearances as well.
Asheville had no shortage of scoring chances in the early innings as it had two men reach base in each of the first four frames. Like he has done several times this season, Ty Kaufman jumpstarted the Bulldog bats with a leadoff single in the first. Dominic Freeberger followed with a walk before Bacot drove Kaufman in with a single to give Asheville an early 1-0 lead.
After the first inning, both teams' pitching staffs settled down and snuffed out any scoring chances until the sixth. ETSU started the sixth inning with an infield single and then a two-run home run by Bryce Hodge gave the Buccaneers their first lead of the game, 2-1, before adding another run before Asheville got the third out of the frame.
The Buccaneer offense would stay hot in the seventh scoring two more runs to grow their lead to 5-1. Asheville would answer back in the eighth, however, Lanowitz drove in Johnson with a sacrifice fly to get the deficit back to three. Reece followed soon after with a two-run home run to bring Asheville back within one run, 5-4.

Unfortunately, the Buccaneer bats kept rolling as they got two of those runs back in the bottom of the eighth before finishing off the contest with a 7-4 win.
Asheville, now 17-25, will return to action this weekend with a three-game series at USC Upstate. The opening game of the series is set for Friday evening at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
