SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate used a trio of multi-run innings to upend the UNC Asheville baseball team by a score of 8-0 Friday evening in Big South action. With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 17-26 overall and 11-8 in conference play.
Asheville totaled five hits in Friday's series opener. Ty Kaufman posted two of those five hits on 2-for-4 night with a double. Cameron Johnson notched a triple, while Dominic Freeberger and Corbin Lanowitz added singles. Michael Groves also reached base twice thanks to a pair of walks.
Zeus Ponder made the start on the mound for Asheville on Friday. Ponder, who took the loss to move his record to 0-3, allowed five runs on seven hits to go with two strikeouts.
Upstate wasted little time getting into the run column on Friday. A leadoff triple was quickly followed by an RBI groundout to put the Spartans up 1-0 in the top of the first. The Spartans would follow that single run with two runs in the fourth, fifth, seventh, and yet another single run in the eighth to further grow their lead.
Asheville had its opportunities to crack the scoreboard as it had runners on in seven of the nine innings. The Bulldogs' best chance to score was in the seventh. Asheville loaded the bases with one out but back-to-back strikeouts stopped the Bulldog scoring threat.
Asheville and Upstate will take the field for game two of the series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch for that contest is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
