ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will wrap up its non-conference schedule on Tuesday when it visits East Tennessee State. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Buccaneers is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville snapped a four-game losing skid on Sunday as it used strong pitching and timely hitting to upend Gardner-Webb by a score of 7-1. With the win, Asheville is now 17-24 overall and 11-7 in Big South play.
National Ranking in Double Plays – With a few more double plays turned over the weekend, the Bulldogs continue to lead the nation in double plays turned per game (1.20). Burnett has a two-home run game – A highlight for the Bulldogs on Sunday was freshman Robbie Burnett hitting a pair of home runs. Burnett, who hit a solo and a two-run home run on Sunday, is the first Bulldog to have a multi-home run game this season and is the first Asheville player to have such a performance since Brandon Lankford launched two over the fence last May at Presbyterian. With his two-home run day, Burnett now leads the Bulldogs with four home runs this season.
Ty Setting the Table – Sophomore Ty Kaufman has been on a roll lately hitting out of the leadoff spot for the Bulldogs. Kaufman will bring a 16-game on-base streak with him to Johnson City on Tuesday along with a six-game hitting streak. Overall, Kaufman is hitting .359 in 2022 when he leads off an inning for Asheville.
Scoring Early = Success – Asheville, like most teams, has fared much better this season when it can score early or first. The Bulldogs are 8-3 this spring when they score in the first inning and are 14-6 when they score the first run of a game.
About ETSU – Like Asheville, ETSU got back into the win column on Sunday as it picked up a 12-8 win at Samford. ETSU's strength as a team lies in its offense as it ranks 16th nationally in slugging percentage (.511) and 32nd in the country in team batting average (.299).
Series Rewind vs. ETSU – Tuesday's game between the Bulldogs and Buccaneers will mark the third time this season that these two teams have played each other. ETSU won the previous two games by scores of 4-1 and 8-3. Overall, the Buccaneers hold a 39-27 edge on the Bulldogs in the all-time series that dates back to 1986. Asheville's last win vs. ETSU coming on May 16, 2017 when the Bulldogs came away with a 6-4 victory.
