05.03.2022 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C.  – The UNC Asheville baseball team will open a four-game home stand on Wednesday when it welcomes Wofford to Greenwood Field for a non-conference matchup. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Terriers is set for 5 p.m.

Fan Information – Due to the 2022 UNC Asheville baseball season being presented by Ingles, admission to Wednesday's game and all of Asheville's home games this season will be free.

Last Time Out – Asheville dropped a 5-0 decision on the road at Charlotte last Tuesday. With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 16-21 on the 2022 season.

Among the Best at Turning Two – Despite not playing for a week, the Bulldogs still rank near the top of the national leaderboards in terms of total double plays turned and double plays per game. In the latter, Asheville is tied for first nationally with New Mexico with 1.16 double plays per game. Overall, Asheville is tied for fifth in total double plays with 43. Only New Mexico (50), Baylor (47), New Orleans (47), and Arizona (45) have turned more double plays than the Bulldogs in 2022.

Applause for April Performances – Asheville had multiple players post stellar performances last month to fuel a 7-7 record for the Bulldogs that included a 6-3 mark vs. Big South competition. Perhaps no Bulldog hitter has been hotter recently than Dylan Bacot, as he has hit .412 with one home run and 19 RBI in April. On the mound, the Bulldogs had eight different pitchers log an ERA of under 3.00 for the month. Pacing the pitchers were a pair of left-handers in Justin Honeycutt (1-0, 1.88 ERA in 14.1 innings) and Jacob Edwards (4-0, 2.30 ERA in 27.1 innings pitched).

Player to Watch – A player to watch on Wednesday for Asheville is senior utility man Dominic Freeberger.  In five career games vs. Wofford, Freeberger is hitting .348 with eight RBI. Furthermore, Freeberger has posted four multi-hit games vs. the Terriers, including a pair of three-hit outings.

Scouting Wofford – The Terriers have put up one of their best seasons in school history so far in 2022. Wofford, which has been ranked in multiple national polls this spring, brings a 31-13 overall record with it to Asheville on Wednesday. Wofford is a balanced team as it ranks third nationally in stolen bases (120), sixth in strikeout to walk ratio (3.38), and leads the Southern Conference in team batting average checking in at .304.

Series Rewind vs. Terriers – The all-time series between the Bulldogs and Terriers is tied at 25-25. Wofford owns a five-game winning streak against Asheville dating back to 2019, which includes a 9-8 win in Spartanburg earlier this season. This continues a trend as the series' last three games have all been decided by one run. The Bulldogs' last win vs. Wofford came back on April 18, 2018, at Greenwood Field by a score of 5-3.
