Bulldogs battle but drop a 4-3 decision on the road at Presbyterian
04.02.2022 | Baseball
CLINTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a close game on the road at Presbyterian on Saturday by a score of 4-3.
Asheville had no shortage of chances to score runs on Saturday. The Bulldogs totaled 12 hits on the day, and three players had multi-hit outings. Robbie Burnett and Fermin Osio had three-hit days, while Cam Johnson continues to swing a hot bat vs. Big South competition, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Bulldogs used just two pitchers on Saturday. Starter Ryan Douglas tossed the first 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Justin Honeycutt once again gave Asheville a stellar relief outing pitching 4.2 innings allowing just one run on three hits to go with three strikeouts.
In an odd game, the Bulldogs had two runners reach base in six of the nine innings on Saturday. Asheville began the contest by loading the bases in the first inning but did not find a pivotal hit to take the lead.
Presbyterian would break the tie with a three-run third inning. However, the inning could have been much worse if the Bulldogs did not turn a key double play to get out of the jam with the score reading 3-0 Blue Hose.
After PC tacked on another run in the fifth, the Bulldogs finally broke through in the sixth. Grayson Preslar drove in Johnson to make the score 4-1. Asheville continued to chip away at the deficit in the eighth. A costly Blue Hose error with the bases loaded that more than likely would've been a double play allowed a run to score for Asheville to make it 4-2. Dominic Freeberger got the Bulldogs one run closer with a sacrifice fly. Following Freeberger's sac fly, the Bulldogs nearly tied the game but had a runner thrown out at the plate for the second time in the game to preserve the 4-3 lead heading to the ninth.
Dylan Bacot led the ninth inning with a walk for Asheville. Unfortunately, the elusive clutch hit still evaded the Bulldogs as PC reliever Luke Matthews induced a fly out and struck out two hitters to clinch the series win for the Blue Hose.
The series finale between the Bulldogs and Blue Hose is set for Sunday afternoon. The first pitch for that contest is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
