Bulldogs get back into the win column by defeating Presbyterian, 7-1

CLINTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team got back into the win column on Sunday as it knocked off Presbyterian by a score of 7-1.
Senior Jacob Edwards was outstanding on the mound for Asheville on Sunday. Edwards, who moved to 3-3 with the victory, threw 8.2 innings and allowed one run on eight hits to go along with nine strikeouts. Edwards moved into the program's top 10 all-time strikeout list with the nine strikeouts, with his career total moving up to 176.
Offensively, the Bulldogs saw a few players have good days at the plate. PJ Heintz and Dominic Freeberger had two hits on the day, while Cam Johnson went 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored, and drew three walks.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the very first inning. PC starter Daniel Eagen had a bumpy opening frame allowing singles to Freeberger and Michael Groves. Eagan then walked Johnson and Freeberger came in to score after a pitch hit Fermin Osio.
Asheville's biggest inning, however, came in the third. Heintz came through with a key two-run single to score Johnson and Groves to make the score 3-0 Bulldogs. Later in the inning, Grayson Preslar drew a walk to score Osio to tack on another run for Asheville. Perhaps the most impressive point of the Bulldog rally was that it all occurred with two outs.
Johnson would then notch his first home run of 2022 in the fourth, which was a two-run blast. Heintz connected for his second of the season with a solo shot in the fifth to make the score 7-0 Bulldogs heading into the sixth.
Following five scoreless frames by Edwards, Presbyterian scratched its first run across the plate in the sixth to make the score 7-1. However, Edwards remained in control, and Asheville was able to finish off the 7-1 win. A crucial part of Edwards' success on Sunday was three timely double plays turned by the Bulldogs to put a stop to any big innings brewing for PC. Asheville turned two six times in the three games this weekend and has now completed a Big South-high 27 double plays in 2022.
Asheville, now 10-16 overall and 5-4 in Big South, will return home to Greenwood Field next weekend for another Big South series against league newcomer North Carolina A&T. The series opener is set for Friday and is set for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
