Bulldogs win a 13-6 slugfest vs. North Carolina A&T to clinch a series victory
04.10.2022 | Baseball
Like yesterday's win over the Aggies, the Bulldogs received production throughout their batting order on Sunday. Eight of the nine starters picked up at least one hit, and six different players scored at least one run.
Individually, Dylan Bacot led the charge going 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, and two RBI. Robbie Burnett and Grayson Preslar launched their respective second home runs of the season. Burnett, who was Asheville's No. 3 hitter Sunday, did an excellent job alongside Ty Kaufman (1-for-3, reached base three times, two runs scored) and Dominic Freeberger (1-for-3, reached three times, three runs scored) in getting on base for Asheville's middle of the order to drive them in.
Again like in Saturday's win, the Bulldogs used just two pitchers on Sunday. Starter Jacob Edwards pitched the first 5.2 innings and notched his fourth win of the season. Blake Little finished things out, tossing the final 3.1 innings to pick up a save. Little allowed just one hit, no runs, and struck out three in his appearance Sunday.
Asheville wasted little time jumping on the Aggies on Sunday. Kaufman and Freeberger worked walks before Bacot delivered a two-run single to give the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs kept the pressure on in the second. Tylan Reece began the frame with a leadoff double. Preslar then plated Reece with a triple to rightfield. Kaufman followed with a single to score Preslar before Freeberger added a single of his own to make it first and second with one out. Burnett then brought them all home with a three-run home run to make it 7-0 Bulldogs.
Michael Groves added a two-run single in the fourth to grow Asheville's lead to 9-0. A&T, however, finally got to Asheville's starter Edwards in the sixth. In the sixth, the Aggies sent 10 men to the plate and scored six times to take a sizable chunk out of the Bulldog lead heading to the late innings.
After being held scoreless in the fifth and sixth, the Bulldogs built their lead back up in the late innings. An unearned run scored by Bacot in the seventh was followed by a three-run eighth inning. Preslar got it started with an opposite-field solo home run before Cam Johnson lined a two-run single to score Freeberger and Burnett to close out the scoring on Sunday for Asheville.
Asheville will be back in action on Tuesday when it welcomes in rival Western Carolina for a non-conference matchup at Greenwood Field. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Catamounts is set for 5 p.m.
