ELON, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to gain an early lead in its non-conference game at Elon on Friday. However, the Phoenix rebounded and ended up taking game one from the Bulldogs by a score of 6-3.
On Friday, Michael Groves posted the lone multi-hit outing for Asheville, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Ty Kaufman (1-for-4, run scored, walk) and Grayson Preslar (two walks) also reached base twice for Asheville. PJ Heintz tallied a double, while the trio of Robbie Burnett, Dylan Bacot, and Cameron Johnson all had run-producing hits in the game to round out the offensive leaders for Asheville.
As mentioned earlier, Friday's game began well for Asheville. Kaufman led things off a single before Burnett tripled to rightfield to score him and give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Bacot followed Burnett's triple with a ringing single to left to put the Bulldogs up by a pair of runs.
Elon answered back in the second inning on the power of a pair of doubles and a single to tie the score at two. However, Asheville was able to stop the rally there thanks to a nice throw from Heintz to catch a base stealer to end the inning.
The Phoenix briefly had the lead thanks to a run in the fourth before Johnson tied the score again with an RBI double to make it 3-3. The difference in the game came in the bottom half of the fifth. A walk and single by Elon were followed by a big three-run home run to give the Phoenix the lead back, 6-3. That home run turned out to be the difference as the Phoenix went on to win Friday's game by the same 6-3 final tally.
In addition to the home run, a vital part of Elon's win was its work by its bullpen. Following Johnson's RBI double in the fifth, the Phoenix relievers retired 13 straight Bulldog hitters to finish off the win. Asheville also had some stellar relief work to keep it within striking distance as Chris Banks (2.2 innings), and Bryce Fisher (1 inning) kept the Phoenix off the scoreboard following the key home run.
Asheville, now 12-18 on the 2022 season, and Elon will continue their series on Saturday. The first pitch for the twin bill has been pushed back to 1:30 p.m. from the original start time of noon.
