ELON, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team split a doubleheader on the road at Elon on Saturday. The Phoenix won the first game by a score of 5-2, but the Bulldogs rebounded to take the second contest, 11-5.
Game 1 Recap – The Bulldogs and Phoenix played another competitive game to begin Saturday's doubleheader. Asheville nearly matched Elon in the hit column (nine to 10), but a pair of Bulldog errors and five walks proved to be the difference as the Phoenix went on to win game one, 5-2.
Asheville was led by the tandem of Tylan Reece and Dylan Bacot in game one. Reece went 3-for-4 and drove in Asheville's first run of the game in the second inning. Bacot, meanwhile, had a 2-for-4 day with an RBI and picked up the Bulldogs' lone extra-base hit in the contest (double).
Like it did in the series opener on Friday, Asheville put the pressure on Elon right away to begin Saturday's action. The Bulldogs loaded the bases but could not find that critical hit to score the game's first run. Those first scoring plays came in the bottom of the first as the Phoenix had two runs on one hit and were helped by two Bulldog errors to stake themselves to the early 2-0 lead.
Elon would tack on some more runs (one in the third, two in the sixth) to build its lead. Reece notched an RBI single to put the Bulldogs on the board, and Bacot drove in Robbie Burnett in the seventh. Unfortunately, after the Bacot double, the Phoenix retired seven straight Bulldogs that included six strikeouts to finish off the 5-2 win.
Game 2 Recap – After being held to five runs through the first two games this weekend, Asheville's bats woke up significantly in the series finale as the Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits and scored 11 runs. The Bulldogs led by as many as eight runs (8-0) before Elon made a comeback in the middle innings, making it a three-run game headed to the eighth. Fortunately, the Bulldogs had one more spark left offensively as they scored three runs to grow their lead back to six, which turned out to be the winning margin, 11-5.
Cameron Johnson led the way for Asheville in the series finale as he finished with a career-high four hits on a 4-for-4 effort at the plate with two RBI. Bacot (2-for-4, two RBI, two runs scored) and Reece (three RBI) continued their hot streak at the plate, while Grayson Preslar hit his team-leading third home run of the spring and finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
On the mound, senior Jacob Edwards gave Asheville another stellar start. Edwards allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out four to pick up his fifth win of the season. Dominic Freeberger came in for the ninth inning and struck out the side to clinch the victory for the Bulldogs.
Next Up – Asheville will return home on Tuesday to face off against East Tennessee State in a non-conference game at Greenwood Field. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Buccaneers is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
