ETSU uses three home runs to upend the Bulldogs, 8-3

04.19.2022 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – East Tennessee State hit three home runs on its way to an 8-3 win over the UNC Asheville baseball team Tuesday evening at Greenwood Field.

The Bulldogs had no shortage of baserunners on Tuesday as all nine members of Asheville's starting lineup reached base at least once, and seven of the nine picked up hits. Brock Mercado led the way going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while the duo of Cameron Johnson and Robbie Burnett reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.

On the pitching side, Asheville had staff day Tuesday as 10 pitchers saw action. Seven of the 10 logged scoreless appearances, while the trio of Cole Bates, Chris Sabo, and Jay Allmer each logged one-two-three innings.

Asheville cracked the scoreboard first on Tuesday. Dominic Freeberger got things started with a single up the middle at the bottom of the first, and Burnett then drew one of his two walks to give the Bulldogs runners at first and second with one out. A wild pitch moved Freeberger up to third base, and then Dylan Bacot drove him in with a sacrifice fly to stake Asheville to an early 1-0 lead.

ETSU would promptly answer the run with one of its own in the top of the second as a solo home run evened the score at 1-1. The Buccaneers then took their first lead of the contest with a four-run fourth inning powered by four hits. The two big ETSU hits were a three-run a double and another solo home run.

The Bulldogs would chip away at the four-run deficit in the sixth. Tylan Reece and Mercado notched back-to-back singles with one out to get the rally started. Grayson Preslar and Ty Kaufman then drew back-to-back walks to force in a run before Freeberger was hit by a pitch to force in another. However, the Buccaneers stopped the rally there and took a 5-3 lead to the seventh.

The Buccaneers would add some more breathing room in the eighth as a three-run home run suddenly grew their lead to five, 8-3, which turned out to be the final score. In the ninth, the Bulldogs were able to load the bases but could not come up with a key hit to cut into the Buccaneer lead.

Asheville, now 13-20 on the season, will step back into Big South play this weekend when it visits longtime rival Radford for a three-game series. The series between the Bulldogs and Highlanders is scheduled to get underway Friday at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
