Baseball returns to Big South play this weekend with a series at Radford

04.21.2022 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Following four consecutive non-conference games, the UNC Asheville baseball team will return to Big South play this weekend when it visits longtime rival Radford for a three-game series. All three games of the series can be seen on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – The Bulldogs dropped an 8-3 decision to East Tennessee State on Tuesday at Greenwood Field. The loss pushes Asheville's record in 2022 to 13-20 on the season.

Among the Nation's Best in Double Plays – With three more double plays turned Tuesday vs. ETSU, the Bulldogs have now turned 37 double plays this season in 33 games played. Asheville ranks third in the nation in double plays per game (1.33) and tied for fourth in total double plays (37) with Oregon. Only New Mexico (44), New Orleans (42), and Baylor (40) have turned two more than the Bulldogs in 2022.

Bacot's Bat Stays Hot – One of the hottest hitters in the Bulldogs' lineup lately has been Dylan Bacot. Over the last 10 games, Bacot is hitting .395 with 10 RBI, five runs scored, and four doubles. Furthermore, Bacot will bring a nine-game hitting streak with him into this weekend's series vs. Radford.

Edwards in the Big South Ranks – Senior lefthander Jacob Edwards has been one of the top pitchers in the Big South in 2022. Edwards ranks among the top five in the conference in wins (5 – tied for 3rd), strikeouts (56 – 4th), and ERA (2.56 – 3rd). Edwards joins Campbell's Thomas Harrington as the only two pitchers in the conference that rank among the top five in all three categories.

Big South Check-In – This weekend's series begins the second half of Asheville's Big South schedule. The Bulldogs have fared well in their first 12 games of league play posting a 7-5 record, which currently puts them in a tie for fourth place with Winthrop. The top six teams in the league standings will advance to the double elimination Big South Baseball Tournament on May 25-28 in High Point, N.C.

Scouting Radford – Radford will bring a 12-24 overall record that includes a 6-9 mark in Big South play into this weekend's series with the Bulldogs. Despite the sub-.500 records both overall and in conference play, the Highlanders have some momentum as they have won their last two Big South series against High Point and Gardner-Webb.

Series Rewind vs. Radford – Asheville and Radford have met a total of 106 times over the years and remarkably the all-time series is tied at 53-53. This weekend's series will mark the Bulldogs' first trip to Radford since 2018 where they won two of the three games from the Highlanders. Asheville also took two of three games from Radford in a three-game series at Greenwood Field last March.
