Bulldogs tie against Presbyterian after late goal from Behan
10.05.2022 | Men's Soccer
CLINTON, S.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer team took a draw against Presbyterian, 1-1, tying the game late on the back of a sneaky goal from the junior Conor Behan. The draw puts the Bulldogs' Big South record at 0-0-2 to begin the start of conference play.
"Extremely brave and gutsy performance by our boys tonight on the road," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Mick Giordano. "We are proud of them for finding a way to steal points on the road. That is one of the most difficult things to do in college soccer. It was a challenge we gave to the boys headed into today-how can we steal points away from home and keep moving forward."
With ties in the first two conference matches, the Bulldogs jumped out to their best start to Big South play since the shortened 2021 spring season, where the Bulldogs won their first two games.
"Presbyterian is an extremely well coached team and having a tremendous season," Giordano added. "That being said, we certainly believe the groups energy and mentality showed the entire 90 minutes as we played good football, pressed well and found a way to get a result."
The first half started with a defensive battle between the two teams. Presbyterian came into the match as the Big South's leading defense, to which Asheville defenders and goalkeeper A.J. Bengds matched throughout the game. The only defensive mistake came early in the 12th minute of the game, when the Blue Hose were able to get a pass behind the Asheville's back line, leading to a goal from Nacho Gallego.
Down a goal, Asheville picked up the pace on offense in the second half, with a close free kick attempt from Brendan Herb and a near miss off a header from Myles Edmondson.
Coming out for the second half, the Bulldogs played methodically, possessing the ball on the Presbyterian side of the field for most of the half. Nine different Bulldogs were able to get shots off in the second half, outpacing Presbyterian shots on goal by five to one. Stewart Patnaud put up a few of those shots, one sharply hit shot in the 52nd minute was narrowly saved by the Blue Hose goalkeeper.
Asheville finally scored in the 76th minute after putting the pressure on the Presbyterian defense for nearly the entire half. After a Sam Presser shot was saved, the Bulldogs were able to get a loose ball in front of the net, allowing Conor Behan to tap the ball into the net for the equalizing goal.
The Bulldogs, now 1-7-3 on the season, will return to the pitch on Saturday when they travel to Buies Creek to face Big South leading Campbell in a match scheduled for 8 p.m.
