Bulldogs score first but fall on the road at Campbell, 3-1
10.08.2022 | Men's Soccer
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team netted the first goal in its match Saturday at Campbell. However, the Camels rallied to knock off the Bulldogs by a score of 3-1 in Big South action. With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 1-8-3 overall and 0-1-2 in conference play.
It did not take long for the Bulldogs to score the match's first goal. Freshman Sam Pitts-Eckersall got the Bulldogs on the board first with his fifth goal of his freshman campaign to make the score 1-0 Asheville. Furthermore, Pitts-Eckersall's five goals are the most by a Bulldog since 2016 when former Bulldog Zach Joens netted eight goals.
It looked for a lengthy stretch of time that Asheville may take the lead into halftime. However, the Camels netted the equalizer with 17 seconds to go in the half to tie the score at 1-1.
Campbell, which ranked among the top 30 teams in the nation in terms of scoring offense coming into Saturday's match, found the back of the net twice in the second half to finish off the 3-1 win over Asheville.
Asheville will be back in action next Saturday when it welcomes longtime rival Winthrop to Greenwood Field. Kickoff for Saturday's match, which will also be the team's senior day, is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
