Bulldogs drop match against Winthrop, 1-0
10.15.2022 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer team was unable to capitalize on its scoring attempts Saturday vs. Winthrop and fell to the Eagles, 1-0. With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 1-9-3 overall and 0-2-2 in conference play.
The Bulldogs had flurries of scoring opportunities throughout the match, including the opening minutes. Asheville took five shots in the first seven minutes against the Winthrop defense. Unfortunately, no shot found its mark and the Bulldogs got caught on their heels as Winthrop took a deflected Bulldog shot all the way down field to score in the eighth minute.
This proved to be the only goal of the match as the two teams continued to battle. The Bulldogs took quite a few shots, tallying seven shots on goal throughout the match, each one saved by the Winthrop goalkeeper.Â
Sam Pitts-Eckersall and Sam Presser each led the team with six shot attempts and two shots on goal. Brendan Herb also put up four clean looks and one shot on goal for the Bulldogs but was unable to reach the back of the net. The best chance of the night came from a free kick near the mid-field line, in which Andrew Rossetti was able to put a head on the ball but was unable to connect for the goal.
Asheville will be back in action Tuesday when it welcomes Longwood to Greenwood Field. This contest is a result of a postponement from earlier this year because of inclement weather. Kickoff for Tuesday's match is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
