Men's Soccer Battles in 3-1 Loss at Memphis Friday Night

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer battled in a 3-1 loss Friday night (Sept. 4) at Memphis in non-conference action.

The teams played through hot conditions at kickoff, that saw Memphis create most of the chances throughout the first half. Asheville was able to generate a few chances throughout the half, including the one that put them ahead at the break. As Asheville would advance into the Memphis end approaching the last 15 minutes of the first half, Arnor Hardarson fought through a challenge and fed a ball ahead to Tyler Ware. Ware then fed the ball forward to find Hardarson advancing through a crowd, who scored his second of the season and sixth of his Bulldog career for a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute.

The teams would continue the trend of trading runs and possessions throughout the early second half, before Memphis would tie the game in the 71st minute with a goal from Carson Banham assisted by Miller Lashlee and Dino Stavros. Miller and Stavros would hook up again less than two minutes later for the go-ahead goal, as Miller scored from Stavros to put the Tigers ahead 2-1. Ryan Syrio would score from Lashlee in the 81st minute to bring the match to its final score.

Asheville totaled 10 shots in the match including five shots on goal, while also edging Memphis in corner kicks 6-5 in the contest. Ware and Hardarson each led the offense with two shots apiece with Hardarson matching his career-high, while Woody Angell, Joseph Ling, Ian Smith, Orthodoxous Orthodoxou, Matteo Samori and Kayoum M'Bamba each posted one shot in the match. Lucca Barros (2-1-1) made three saves in 72 minutes between the pipes, while Andrew Kohlberg made the first save of his collegiate career in the remaining 17 minutes in goal. Â
