Quick Goal, Big Saves Lead Bulldogs to Shutout over Wofford on Tuesday

09.08.2026 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer saw a quick goal and several big-time saves power the Bulldogs to a 1-0 shutout over Wofford on Tuesday (Sept. 8) at Greenwood Field. The win handed Wofford their first loss of the season, while the Bulldogs recorded their third consecutive shutout in the series against Wofford.

Orthodoxous Orthodoxou scored the lone goal of the game off a broken play just 19 seconds in, after a ball played forward into a crowd was corralled by Tyler Ware. Ware was able to feed the ball to Orthodoxou, who ripped his third goal of the season to the lower right corner off his left foot for the seventh goal of his career and his second career game-winner. Ware logged his second helper of the season, and the ninth of his college career on the winner. The teams would trade runs, pressures and possessions throughout the remainder of the first half, as Wofford outshot Asheville 9-3 in the opening frame. Wofford's best chance of the opening half and arguably of the game came in the 43rd minute, when a VAR review prompted a Bulldog red card that set up a Wofford penalty kick with a chance to tie the game. Taylor Bowen stepped to the dot for the chance and was stonewalled by Lucca Barros with a diving save to the left corner of the net as the Bulldogs led 1-0 at the half.

The teams did more of the same in the second half, despite Asheville down to 10 men for the remainder of the match. Despite Wofford outshooting Asheville 8-4 in the frame, Barros made three big saves in the second half for his second shutout of the season and sixth of his Bulldog career.

Asheville logged seven shots in the match including one on goal, along with one corner kick in the contest. Orthodoxou paced the Bulldogs with three shots in the match, while Louie Salkeld, Joseph Ling, Ian Smith and Dwayne Campina Do Vale each registered one shot in the match. Barros (3-1-1) made seven saves between the pipes in the clean sheet effort.

The Bulldogs (3-1-1) return to action on Saturday (Sept. 12) at VMI in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. from Lexington, Va. with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
