Bulldogs Rout VMI for Non-Conference Win on Saturday

LEXINGTON, Va. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer routed VMI on the road by a score of 4-0 for a non-conference victory on Saturday (Sept. 12). The Bulldogs match last year's 4-1-1 start through six matches on the season, and have also registered back-to-back shutouts for the second time in as many seasons.

The scoring started quick, when Tyler Ware scored his third goal of the season off an assist from Lennart Granzow in just the third minute to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. The goal was Ware's 10th collegiate goal of his career, while the assist was the first of Granzow's Bulldog career. The Bulldogs kept the pressure on in the half and would add to their lead in the 12th minute when Woody Angell would score his second of the season off an assist from Ware. The goal was Angell's second as a Bulldog and 13th of his college career, while the helper was Ware's third of the season and 10th of his career. As Asheville continued to maintain pressure in the offensive end, the Bulldogs would add two quick goals in the final minutes of the first half. Dwayne Campina Do Vale would make it 3-0 with his second of the season in the 43rd minute, off an assist from Arnor Hardarson for his second helper of the season and fifth of his career. Roughly 90 seconds later in the final minute of the half, Hardarson would score from Taichi Nogami for a 4-0 halftime lead. The goal was Hardarson's third of the season and seventh of his Bulldog career, while Nogami registered his third assist of the season. The Bulldogs managed to hold VMI without a shot in the opening half of play.

Each team registered four shots in the second half, with Asheville able to hold onto the shutout for the third clean sheet of the season.

Asheville outshot VMI 18-4 in the match, including 11-2 in shots on frame. Asheville also edged VMI 4-3 in corner kicks in the contest. Ware paced the offense with a career-high five shots in the match, while Angell, Kayoum M'Bamba and Hardarson each posted three shots in the match with M'Bamba matching his career high and Hardarson setting a new career-best mark. Matteo Samori registered two shots in the contest, while Alexander Guindy and Campina Do Vale each had one shot in the match with Guindy posting the first shot of his collegiate career. Lucca Barros (4-1-1) stopped two shots between the pipes in the match, notching his third shutout of the season and seventh of his career.
