Bulldogs Top ETSU 2-1 for Frid's 50th Career Win

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer topped East Tennessee State 2-1 Wednesday night (Sept. 16) at Greenwood Field to secure Danny Frid's 50th career head coaching victory. With the program's first win at home over ETSU since 2009, the Bulldogs now at 5-1-1 are off to their best start since 1995.
The teams traded runs, chances and possessions in the first half, with each team recording seven shots in the opening period and the match heading to the break scoreless. ETSU posted both corner kicks in the opening half, while Lucca Barros made two saves in the opening half.
After the second half started with more of the same, the Bulldogs would finally break through in the 61st minute for the game's first goal. Joe Ling fed a ball down the far wing to the edge of the box for Tyler Ware, who got a step on his defender toward the end line. Ware fed a ball back to the center of the goal frame to a hard-charging Matteo Samori, who headed home his third of the season and third of his career.
Asheville totaled 16 shots in the match, with eight on target in the win along with two corner kicks. Ware paced the offense with four shots, while Louie Salkeld, Kayoum M'Bamba, Campina Do Vale and Samori each had two shots in the match. Campina Do Vale matched his career-high in the effort. James Davies, Lennart Granzow, Arnor Hardarson and Woody Angell also had one shot apiece in the match, Davies registered his first career shot in the effort, while Barros (5-1-1) recorded a new career-high with nine saves in the match.

ETSU would respond with the game-tying goal just six minutes later, when Jaime Carrillo scored off an assist from Joe Gonzalez to level the game 1-1 when Carrillo stashed home a shot from Gonzalez that deflected off the right post. The game-winner would come just four minutes later, when an Asheville corner kick led to a failed clear as the ball found Dwayne Campina Do Vale at the top of the box.
