CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team trailed by as many as 15 points Friday night at Charleston Southern, but came back to hold the lead. However, the Buccaneers rebounded to edge the Bulldogs in the closing minutes, 67-63. The loss moves Asheville's record to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the Big South.
For the first time this season, four different Bulldogs finished a game in double figures. Amaryah Corpening netted a season-high 19 points to lead all scorers. Fellow senior Nadiria Evans added 14 points and helped set up her teammates with a team-high six assists. Freshman Lani Woods provided a spark off the bench scoring a career-high 14 points that included a 4-for-6 effort from 3-point range. Kai Carter rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points to go with five rebounds.
Asheville's offense began Friday's contest slowly, and the Buccaneers took full advantage. Shooting 50 percent from the field and 3-point range, Charleston Southern scored 15 of the game's first 18 points to jump out to an early lead. Evans knocked down a pair of jumpers to spark the Bulldog offense CSU still held a 12-point lead after one quarter, 21-9.
"I thought it was a good battle," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Honey Brown. "We had a tough first quarter, but I'm pleased with our fight and energy to get back in the game and take the lead. Charleston Southern had a balanced attack, and that was tough to defend."
After shooting a combined 27.3 percent from the field in the opening frame, the Bulldog offense started to click in the second. Corpening netted 13, and Woods added 11 off the bench to cut into the Buccaneer lead significantly. Collectively, the Bulldogs shot 68.8 percent from the field in the second on 16 attempts, including a 5-for-7 effort from beyond the arc. The 68.8 shooting percentage is the second-highest of any quarter by the Bulldogs this season. One of those makes from 3-point range came in the closing seconds from Corpening, and that pulled the Bulldogs within a point at the break, 38-37.
Asheville continued its comeback quest when the teams returned for the second half. The Bulldogs eventually broke through and led for the first time in the contest. However, the Buccaneers quickly regrouped and put together a 9-0 run to put the pressure back on Asheville. A pair of free throws in the final seconds from Corpening tied the score at 49, heading into the last quarter.
The fourth quarter was just as competitive as the first three. Each team held the lead at different points, but no advantage was more than two possessions. Asheville had an opportunity to tie the game at 65 after a CSU turnover with 11 seconds to go, but a jumper from Corpening did not fall. Charleston Southern snagged the rebound and knocked down a pair of free throws to finish off the 67-63 victory.
The Bulldogs and Buccaneers will match up again on Saturday to conclude the series. Tip-off for that contest is set for 5 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
