Women's Basketball Returns with a Trip to Charleston Southern

GAME NOTES (PDF)

ASHEVILLE, N.C.
 – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will resume its season this weekend when it travels to Charleston Southern for a pair of Big South Conference matchups. Friday's game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off, while Saturday's is slated for 5 p.m.

Last Time Out – In its previous game, Asheville came away with a 68-52 victory over Longwood back on December 31 following a 74-69 triumph over the Lancers a day before. With those wins, the Bulldogs are 4-5 overall and 3-1 in league play entering this weekend's series at CSU.

Big South Player of the Week – Senior Nadiria Evans was named the Big South Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the games played on Dec. 28-Jan. 3. Evans, who was also recognized by College Sports Madness as the Big South Mid-Major Player of the Week, is the first Bulldog to attain this weekly honor since January 21, 2019, when Sonora Dengokl earned the same distinction.

Exclusive Company – In addition to receiving player of the week honors, Evans also joined an exclusive club in the program's history during the team's last set of games. With a 34-point effort against Longwood on Dec. 30, Evans is the 22nd Bulldog to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in her career. Furthermore, the 34-point effort matched Evans' career-high and is the most points scored by a Big South player this season.

Raining Threes – In its last victory over Longwood, Asheville knocked down season-high nine 3-pointers. A significant contributor to that was sophomore Kai Carter, who accounted for six of those makes. Carter's six makes from long distance are the most by a Bulldog in a game since Jessica Wall netted six as well against Charleston Southern on February 5, 2019.

It's Like Déjà vu – With back-to-back wins over Longwood, the Bulldogs improved to 3-1 in Big South play. Asheville is no stranger to success early in its conference schedule as it has started 3-1 or better against league foes in four of the last six seasons (2015-16, 2017-18, 2019-20, and 2020-21).

Schedule Update – One of the postponements that the Bulldogs had in the past couple weeks has been rescheduled. The games between Asheville and Presbyterian that were originally set for Jan. 4-5, have been changed to Feb. 3 and Feb. 16 at PC. Both games are scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off. About Charleston Southern – Charleston Southern enters this weekend's series with the Bulldogs sporting a 5-5 record overall, including a 3-3 mark against Big South opponents. CSU currently paces the conference in both field goal percentage (.414) and 3-point field goal percentage (.393). The Buccaneers have achieved these numbers with several contributors as they have six different players averaging at least six points per game and eight that average five or more.

Series Rewind vs. Charleston Southern – There is plenty of history between Charleston Southern and UNC Asheville. The two programs have matched up over 70 times since the first meeting during the 1985-86 season. Charleston Southern won two of the three matchups during the 2019-20 season, but the Bulldogs knocked off the Buccaneers in the Big South tournament's opening round, 82-46. In that game, Tamiah Lewis set a new Big South Tournament First Round record with five made 3-pointers. Overall, the Bulldogs are 38-34 all-time against Charleston Southern.

How to Follow – Friday's and Saturday's games will both be streamed on ESPN+. Live stats will also be available for both contests.
