Bulldogs Bounce Back With 65-58 Win at Charleston Southern
01.16.2021 | Women's Basketball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team got back into the win column on Saturday as it knocked off Charleston Southern, 65-58. The victory boosts Asheville's record to 5-6 overall and 4-2 against Big South opponents.
"I'm very proud of our bounce back win today," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "We didn't always get stops, but I loved our fight. Happy for the road win because they are not easy to get in this league!"
Nadiria Evans led Asheville with 20 points for her sixth 20-plus point outing of the season. Evans not only led the Bulldogs on the scoresheet, as she also paced the team in rebounds with nine and assists with four. Kai Carter finished the night with 16 points that included a trio of made 3-pointers, and Amaryah Corpening chipped in 10 points to round out the double-figure scorers for Asheville.
The first two quarters of Saturday's contest were tightly contested as no lead was more than one possession. Asheville put together a balanced offensive attack as six different players scored in the opening 20 minutes. As the first half came to a close, the Bulldogs connected five of seven attempts from the free-throw line to give them a slight 29-25 lead heading into the halftime break.
As the second half began, the two teams continued to jostle to gain some momentum. Asheville was the team that got on a roll as it built a 14-point lead, 52-38, after a layup from Raquel Cassidy. With a little over six minutes to play, Charleston Southern did not go away as it made a run to get back within four points with under a minute to play. The Bulldogs, however, made their free throws to finish off the seven-point victory.
A couple of keys in the victory for Asheville was its work on the glass and its ability to get to the free-throw line. After being out-rebounded 43-36 on Friday, the Bulldogs bounced back to hold the rebounding edge Saturday, 41-40. With the win, Asheville improved to 4-1 this season when it wins the rebounding battle. The Bulldogs also attempted 27 shots from the free-throw line, which is the third-most by the team this season.
"I challenged our players to get on the boards harder, and we did that," Brown added. "I thought our posts were battling on the inside much better today."
The Bulldogs will look to get a winning streak started when they return to action on January 22 at Radford. Tip-off for that game is set for 5 p.m.
