Bulldogs Fall in Game Three as Belmont Walks Off

NASHVILLE, TENN. – UNC Asheville baseball dropped game three of the series to Belmont as the Bruins hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Bulldogs 4-3.
The freshman Ryan Douglas started for the Bulldogs and threw a career-high seven innings as the right-hander allowed only one earned run on six hits while he struck out five.
A one-out double from Sebastian Dunn in the top of the first got the Bulldogs their first baserunner of the game but a groundout and a pop-up stranded Dunn at second.
Belmont got on the board in their first opportunity as the lead-off batter Severance hit a double to right field. Ryan Douglas got the next batter to look at strike three before allowing a single to left field that brought in the runner from second that scored the first run of the ballgame.
Neither team scored in the second or third innings as Belmont led 1-0 going into the fourth innings. The Bulldogs got two runners in scoring position with one out in the top of the fourth as
Dominic Freeberger took a one-out walk and Brandon Lankford hit a double to left-center. The Bruins worked their way around the threat as they forced a double-play to end the Bulldogs' inning.
The Bruins pushed across run number two in the game in the bottom of the fourth as Jarvis led off the inning with a double to left. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a ground out as Belmont took a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs finally broke through with the bats in the fifth inning as UNC Asheville tied the game. Chris Troost led off the inning with a single but was forced out at second as Will Barbour reached first on a fielders' choice. Tye Chastain singled to centerfield advancing Barbour to third as the Bulldogs had runners on the corners with one out.
MJ Lucas hit a one-out single to rightfield to score Barbour from third. Pinch runner Jacob Edwards advanced to third on the play to keep Bulldog runners on the corners. UNC Asheville tied the game on the next hit as Greg Gasparro singled to right field that scored Edwards from third.
UNC Asheville took the lead in the top of the eighth inning as the clean-up hitter Lankford homered for the second time this season as he sent a ball over the leftfield wall to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
The Bruins evened the score in the bottom half of the eighth to tie the game 3-3. Freeberger relieved Douglas in the eighth as he moved to the mound from leftfield. Freeberger got two quick outs before John Behrends homered to rightfield to tie the game.
The Bulldogs went three up and three down in the top of the ninth as Belmont entered the bottom of the ninth with the game still tied at three. Freeberger sent the Bruins' first batter down on strikes but Belmont walked it off with the 4-3 victory as the next batter homered to right field to end the game.
The Bulldogs will be back on the field, Wednesday, March 4, as UNC Asheville takes on Furman at 5 p.m. in Greenville, S.C.
