03.04.2020 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, S.C. – UNC Asheville baseball strung together 10 hits and scored five runs Wednesday evening but fell to Furman, 8-5, at Latham Stadium.
The Bulldogs first three batters in the order set the tone as Greg Gasparro, Sebastian Dunn and Dominic Freeberger combined for seven hits as the trio reached base eight times in the game. Gasparro recorded three hits and reached once on a walk from the Bulldog lead-off spot. The left-handed hitting senior also crossed the plate twice. Dunn led UNC Asheville with three RBIs as the shortstop recorded two hits from the Bulldog two spot.
The Bulldogs grabbed the 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Brandon Lankford doubled to rightfield to lead off the inning. Two batters later Chris Troost singled to centerfield to score Lankford from second and push the first run of the ballgame across.
UNC Asheville didn't have the lead long as the Paladins scored two unearned runs off starter Blake Little in the bottom of the second. Furman got two baserunners on by way of a dropped third strike and a walk with one out. After a strikeout for the second out, the Bulldogs were almost out of the inning but an error by the shortstop extended the bottom of the second once again and loaded the bases. David Webel singled up the middle for the Paladins' first hit of the inning that scored both of the unearned runs to put Furman up 2-1.
The Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning as the UNC Asheville offense pushed two more runs across. MJ Lucas reached on a fielder's choice after Drew Bristow led off the inning with a walk. Gasparro singled to left for his second hit of the game to put runners on first and second with one out. Dunn hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Lucas from third and Freeberger singled to right-center to bring Gasparro in from second.
Little worked around a one-out double in the bottom of the third to preserve the 3-2 lead going into the fourth.
Furman would score three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as they recorded four hits off of Little and brought three runners around to score to take a 5-3 lead. Tyler Serricchio relieved Little in the fourth with one out and threw seven pitches to put the Paladins away with a ground out and a line out. Little punched out four through 3.1 innings while allowing only three earned runs.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth as Lucas reached on an error and Gasparro walked to put two runners on in front of the shortstop Dunn. Dunn hit a 2-1 pitch down the rightfield line for a double that scored two to tie the game at five. Two fly outs stranded Dunn at second and kept the game tied going to the bottom half.
Serricchio remained in the game to pitch the bottom of the fifth and got two more quick outs with a strikeout and a groundout. A walk and a single to the next two batters put two Paladins on but an error on the next fielded ball extended the inning and allowed two runners to score. The next batter singled up the middle as a third run scored. All three runs were unearned runs credited to Serricchio who was relieved by JP Perez following the single. Perez got an easy fly out to stop the bleeding while keeping the game close as Furman led 8-5 going into the sixth.
The Bulldog bullpen held Furman there as Chris Banks, Gino Marra and Kole Harris combined to throw the final three innings as the trio allowed only two hits and struck out four as they got through the seventh, eighth and ninth innings unscathed.
UNC Asheville hit four singles through the final three innings of the game but couldn't get a runner past second base as the Paladins' bullpen shut the door and secured the 8-5 victory.
The Bulldogs will be back on the field this weekend as they will play three against Coppin State. All three games will be played at Moss Stadium on Gardner-Webb's campus. Games one and two are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday, while game three will be at 12 p.m. Sunday.
