Bulldogs Win Final Road Game of the Year 7-3 at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C.? Catlin Carter went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead UNC Asheville to a 7-3 victory over UNC Greensboro on Wednesday night to give the Bulldogs a three-game winning streak for the first time this season.
UNC Asheville (21-28) has won five of its last six games and the last five in a row against non-conference competition. The Dogs are now 17-17 on the season in non-conference play with just one non-conference game remaining on the schedule.
Without a game until May 9, Asheville sent the nations ERA leader, Alan DeRatt to the mound on Wednesday. DeRatt threw six innings allowing two unearned runs on seven hits to improve to 7-2 on the season. Michael Bogaert, Chris Brookey, and Justin Schumer each threw one inning in relief.
The Dogs got on the board in the top of the first inning. Kevin Mattison, who went 2-for-5 for his third straight multi-hit game, led off with an infield single. Kevin Weidenbacher sacrificed him to second base. Justin Schumer singled Mattison to third where he would score on a RBI ground out by Elliott Arrington. With the RBI, Arrington moves just four RBI shy of the Asheville career record for RBI with seven regular season games to play.
Arrington went 2-for-5 in the game and led off the fourth inning with a double to center field. Reed Kreiser followed with a base hit and Danny Baatz laid down a bunt single to load the bases. After a fielder's choice and a strike out, Carter singled to score Kreiser and Baatz. Mattison followed with a RBI double give the Dogs a 4-0 lead.
Both teams scored twice in the sixth. In Asheville's half, Baatz and Beau Zinman both singled to start the frame. Chris Freeman reached on a fielder's choice as Baatz was out at third base. Carter doubled home Zinman but Freeman was thrown out at the plate on the play. Mattison then reached on an error that allowed Carter to score and give Asheville a 6-0 lead.
Greensboro (26-19) broke through in the bottom of the inning. After one out, Matt Gaski reached on an error. Greg Feltis and Ricky Orton singled to load the bases. Tim Carrier hit a sacrifice fly to score the Spartans first run. Sean Snell singled home Feltis to make the score 6-2.
Asheville added an insurance run in the seventh. Arrington had a one out double. Kreiser and Baatz followed with singles pushing Arrington across with the seventh Asheville run.
Greensboro scored in the bottom the ninth. Pedro Leon doubled with one out and scored on a double by Gaski. Schumer got the final two outs but did not qualify for a save.
Schumer and Baatz each had three hits for Asheville. Wes McCall took the loss for UNCG and fell to 1-4 on the season.
The Bulldogs will take the next nine days off for exams before playing the final seven games of the regular season in Asheville. The Dogs host Charleston Southern in a three-games series at Greenwood Field May 9-11.
