Bucs Rally Past Bulldogs in Series Opener

ASHEVILLE, N.C.?Charleston Southern scored eight runs in the top of the ninth inning highlighted by a grand slam by Mark Perry and a three-run homer by Tom Burkett to defeat UNC Asheville 10-6 in game one of a three-game series at Greenwood Field on Friday afternoon.
Justin Schumer (1-6) hit the first batters he faced in the top of the ninth before giving up a base hit to Tyler Thornburg who went 3-for-4 in the game to load the bases. Perry hit his third home run of the season to tie the game at 6-6. After getting an out, Schumer walked two more batters before being relived by Tyler Wohlwend. Wohlwend got an out on one pitch and was 0-2 on Nick Chinners before throwing two boarderline pitches for balls. Chinnes lined a base hit to right field to score Keith Huestedt and give CSU(17-29, 5-11 Big South) a 7-6 lead. Tom Burkett, scored four runs in the game then hit a 3-2 pitch out to left field for his fourth home run of the season.
CSU plated a run in the top of the fifth after two were out. DeRatt walked Burkett. Jake Cox and Thornburg delivered back-to-back singles to plate Burkett.
In the seventh, the Bucs took advantage of three walks in the inning. Kory Morian drew a bases loaded walk to once again plate Burkett who had walked to make the score 5-2.
The ninth inning was the only inning in the game in which CSU had the lead off man on base to start an inning. Cody Higgins (3-2) picked up the win for CSU in relief pitching the final two innings.
DeRatt's 10 strikeouts tied him with Josh White (1996-99) as the school record holder with 239 career strikeouts.
