Baseball Edges Marist, 5-4; DeRatt moves to 4-0

Big Innings Lead CSU Over UNC Asheville on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C.?Charleston Southern scored six runs in the seventh and five runs in the ninth to break open a 4-4 game and take game two 15-8 on Saturday afternoon.

 

CSU' (18-29, 6-11 Big South) Tom Burkett was the player of the game for the second straight day as he went 3-for-3 with two home runs, six RBI, and four runs scored. The Bucs scored eight runs with two outs giving them 13 runs scored with two outs in the first two games of the series.

 

The Bucs jumped out to a 4-0 lead scoring twice in the second inning. Nick Chinners drew a one out walk in front of Burkett's first home run of the day. In the fourth, with two outs and no one on base, Burkett was hit by a pitch. Jake Cox doubled home Burkett and then scored on an error.

 

Asheville (21-30, 4-13 Big South) got on the board in the fifth inning. Danny Baatz drew a one out walk in front of a double by Beau Zinman to place runners at second and third. Chris freeman singled to right field to plate Baatz but Zinman was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning.

 

Kevin Mattison led off the sixth inning with his 10th home run of the year to straight away center field to make the score 4-2. Kevin Weidenbacher singled in front of a double by Justin Schumer. Elliott Arrington followed with a base hit to tie the game at 4-4. Arrington's two RBI tied the UNC Asheville career RBI record of 163 runs batted in held by Brian Shehan (1987-90).

 

CSU scored six runs in the top of the seventh all after two were out. A walk to Kory Morian, a single by Tyler Thornburg, and a walk to Michael Obachowski loaded the bases. Taylor Black was hit by a pitch to give CSU a 5-4 lead. After a pitching change, Chinners delivered a two-RBI single and then Burkett homered to cap off the inning and make the score 10-4.

 

For the second day in a row, the Bucs had a big ninth inning. After scoring eight in the ninth yesterday, CSU scored six in the ninth on five singles and two walks to make the score 15-4.

 

Zinman led off the bottom of the ninth with his second home run of the weekend. Mattison had a two out single and pinch hitter Mike Vaughn doubled off the third baseman's glove. Schumer then hit his eight home run of the year down the left field line to make bring the score to 15-8.

 

Brandon Roberts pitched the final four innings for CSU to improve to 3-2 to the season. Michael Bogaert took the lose falling to 6-5.

 

The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game. Expected starters will be Graham Baughn for UNC Asheville against Thornburg for Charleston Southern. The game can be heard live on uncabulldogs.com.
