Baseball Splits Double Header at Liberty

Baseball Pounds Out 22 Hits and Downs CSU, 11-7

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville pounded out 22 hits and scored 11 runs as the Bulldogs salvaged the final game of its Big South Conference series with Charleston Southern on Sunday with an 11-7 victory at Greenwood Field.

 

Asheville (22-30, 5-13 BSC) was led at the plate by a trio of players with four hits each. Justin Schumer, Chris Freeman and Catlin Carter had four hits on the day for the home team.

 

Senior right-hander Graham Baughn earned the win for Asheville by pitching in-and-out of trouble for seven innings to raise his record to 2-1. He scattered nine hits, allowed five runs, struck out four and walked three.

 

The Buccaneers (18-30, 6-12 BSC) had 10 hits in the game as Mark Perry and Steve Antolik had two hits. Perry had a two-run single for CSU in the fourth inning, while Keith Hustedt had a pinch-hit two run homer in the eighth inning.

 

Asheville jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings as it battered CSU starter Jason Cadenhead (1-2) with seven hits. Schumer had two hits in the first two innings, including a run-scoring single in the second inning.

 

The Bucs got back in the game in the fourth with three runs. The big hit was Perry's bad-hop two-run single.

 

The Bulldogs came back with three runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Reed Krieser and a two-run single by Freeman to push the lead back to 7-3.

 

Charleston Southern rallied to close to 8-7 with two runs in the seventh and eighth innings as Hustedt hit his pinch-hit homer in the eighth. Freeman hit a solo homer for the Bulldogs in the seventh to allow Asheville to keep the lead.

 

The home team put the game away with three runs in the eighth inning, all the runs scored after two outs. Baatz's run-scoring single plated Elliott Arrington. A single from Carter scored Baatz. Kevin Mattison finished the uprising with a run-scoring double.

 

Schumer got the Buccaneers out in order in the ninth to give Asheville the win.

 

UNC Asheville plays next Tuesday night against Appalachian State at McCormick Field starting at 7 p.m.
