App. State Rallies Past UNC Asheville, 9-3

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Elliott Arrington became UNC Asheville's all-time leader in RBI on Tuesday night but Appalachian State rallied past the Bulldogs 9-3 in college baseball action at McCormick Field.
The visiting Mountaineers (30-23) trailed 3-1 entering the seventh inning but scored three times in that frame and added five more runs in the eighth to take control of the game.
Arrington entered Tuesday's game tied with Brian Shehan for the all-time lead at UNC Asheville in career RBI with 163. The senior right-fielder became the all-time leader when he hit a solo homer leading off the sixth inning to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Asheville got another run in the sixth when Reed Kreiser had an infield single and then went to third on a double from Danny Baatz. A run-scoring ground-out from Beau Zinman plated Kreiser for a 3-1 lead.
However, ASU took the lead for good with a three-run uprising in the seventh. An RBI-triple from Jason Rook cut the lead to 3-2. A run-scoring single from David Towanicky knotted the game at 3-3. Later in the inning, Jason Altenhof's run-scoring double put the Apps in front for good at 4-3.
The Mountaineers put the game away in the eighth with five runs. The Apps had five hits in the inning and took advantage of two Bulldog errors.
ASU had 18 hits as four different Mountaineers had three hits. Andrew Franco went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Altenhof went 3-for-6 with two RBI.
The Bulldogs (22-31) got on the board in the first inning. Kevin Mattison walked and went to third on a single from Kevin Weidenbacher. A fielders' choice from Justin Schumer scored Mattison for a 1-0 Asheville lead.
ASU tied the game in the sixth inning. Towanicky, who went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, doubled to open the inning. He scored on Franco's RBI-single.
Mountaineer starter Zach Quate (5-3) picked up the win for the Apps by pitching six innings with seven strikeouts and allowing three runs on five hits. Adam Mills pitched 2.1 innings to earn his fifth save of the year.
The Bulldogs were led at the play by Zinman with two hits.
UNC Asheville will complete the regular season this weekend when the Bulldogs host Winthrop in a three-game series at McCormick Field. The first game of the series is on Friday against the Eagles with first pitch being at 7 p.m.
