Baseball Edges Marist, 5-4; DeRatt moves to 4-0

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville scored five runs in the first inning and that was enough as the Bulldogs edged Marist, 5-4 in college baseball action at McCormick Field Friday afternoon.
Senior right-hander Alan DeRatt (4-0) allowed his first runs of the year but pitched well enough to stay unbeaten on the season. He scattered eight hits, walked five, struck out three and allowed three runs in the five innings of work. DeRatt has given up three runs in 28 innings this season.
Justin Schumer came on to pitch two scoreless innings to earn his fourth save of the season. He allowed just one hit and struck out two.
The Bulldogs jumped on top right away. Lead-off batter Kevin Weidenbacher homered over the center-field wall for a quick 1-0 lead. Kevin Mattison followed with a homer for a 2-0
Later in the inning, Elliott Arrington singled in Reed Kreiser to pad the lead to 3-0. Brett Robinson and Beau Zinman completed the uprising with run-scoring singles to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead.
DeRatt's 24-inning scoreless streak ended in the second with Kyle Meyer drove in Kenny Anderson with a run-scoring single to cut the lead to 5-1.
The Red Foxes (1-6) got a run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Ricky Pacione to narrow the lead to 5-2.
