Baseball Opens Season with Split at PC

CLINTON, S.C.? Alan DeRatt and Jeremy Hall combined on a one-hit shutout as UNC Asheville opened the 2008 season with a 10-0 victory over Presbyterian in game one but PC rebounded with a 4-2 win in game two as the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
DeRatt threw seven no-hit innings walking four and striking out six to earn his first victory of the season. Hall came on to pitch the final two innings allowing just one hit and fanning a pair.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring with a five-run third inning highlighted by the first home runs of the seasons by Justin Schumer and Reed Kreiser. Both players went 3-for-5 in the game for the Bulldogs. Kevin Mattison, Elliott Arrington, and Danny Baatz each had two hits for Asheville who had nine hits and seven earned runs in 3.2 innings against PC starter Jesse Harmon. Asheville added two runs in the fourth, two in the eighth, and one in the ninth.
In the night cap, PC's Ben Dollar held the Bulldogs in check as he went a complete game seven innings. He allowed two runs and three hits and struck out six as the Blue Hose won their first division I game 4-2.
Ben Buchanan took the loss for the Dogs as he also threw a complete game in the shortened second game. He went six innings allowing four runs on nine hits.
Arrington had two more hits for Asheville as he went 5-for-8 on the day and drove in two runs.
The Blue Hose scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Asheville pulled to 3-2 with a run in the third but PC added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
The two teams will play the rubber game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
